If you want to connect a Midi-Synth to AST you must use the MPU401.
This is the 'joystick' port on your AWE card.
Connect the Midi-out plug of the Midi-wire with the Midi-in of your synth.
If you want to use your synth for entering notes into AST, connect the
midi-in of the midi-wire with the midi-out of the synth.

In Ast you can set the midi channel via the effect "dxy".
The receive channel of the synth and the send channel of AST must be
equivalent. If the ommni-mode of your synth is set to "on" it will
receive on all midi channels.
If you want to connect more synths to AST, use the midi thru plug.

Example:

--------------
Your Computer
MPU401
--------------
  in out
   | |
   | | ---------------------
   | | | |
   | | | |
  out in thru in
---------------------- -----------------
Synth 1 Synth 2
Midi channel 1 Midi Channel 2
---------------------- -----------------

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Important:
If Midi in and out does not work the problem are the buggy Sb16 drivers. To reeinitialize
them go to System control. Here deactivate and active the Sb16 drivers.
So the MPU401 should work under Win9x.
