Sure. Get SOX (Sound Exchange) for the PC. It should be available at all
your favorite BBS'. I've used it to convert IFF (actually from the Amiga,
but it should work fine for Mac files, too) to WAV and vice versa a LOT.
I have a real nice sampler on the Amiga (blows the GUS away and it's also
only 8bit!), so I move samples back and forth between my Amiga and PC all
the time. I've even used SOX to convert to the .au format so I can play
funny samples for co-workers on my Sun Workstation.

Subject: .INI and .CFG -files...Why so MANY of them?!!

I really can't understand, why there must be so #%&#@$ many configuration
files with the GUS!! If someone has some sensible information about these
files, please let me know also...!

The problem is, that I'd like to use also other patches than the original
GM -patches with CakeWalk Pro 2.0 for Win, and I haven't yet succeeded in
it other way than moving new patches in PatchDir and editing DEFAULT.CFG
and ULTRAMID.INI.. But then Windows complains something that "Wrong PATCH
version" or smthg when starting... and it's also quite annoying to do this
every time I want to use different patches...!

Isn't there really any other way to do this?
What are the purposes of all the zillions of configuration files?
(I mean why couldn't all the programs possibly use one same file with all
needed information?!!?!..)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Greetings,
I had just D/L both "Gustrit" and "Nothinon" from Epas recently,
and they both "unzip" fine on my machine. However when I tried to run
Triton's demo, the demo ran well but it did not produce any sound ! As
for the "Nothinon", when I tried to run it, it will just return me to the
Dos prompt without showing any error messages! OTHO all other GUS
applications/demos run just fine.
Anyone knows what's happening here? Thanks in advance.

Subject: Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

Hello! The other day when I got a new HD, I had a few problems getting
it to work. During my travails with said HD, my autoexec.bat and
config.sys files got ...um...erased. Ooops. Silly me.

Anyway, I can't remember all of the lines that were in it from before,
so could anyone _please_ send me their copies?

I tried doing setgus, but it said I need the install disks to do that.
However, I don't feel like fishing around for my old 2.06 disks or
downloading gus00038 for another 1/2 hour, so I turn to you. Please! My
GUS was set at the factory defaults (220,1,1,11,7...I think) and all that
(although right now it's at 260 because my new HD came w/o a jumper that
I needed, and the GUS had an extra jumper, so...).

Thank you very much in advance!

Subject: Beginner's problems

Hello, I'm a new GUS user and here are my questions:

Using Recording Session I moused-in some music. It has four tracks,
two with drums and two with the Hammond organ patch. It sounded very
good. I saved it as a .mid file. Next day when I tried to play it,
the drums were extremely loud and the organ hardly audible. When I
try the patches in Patch Manager, their volume is alright.
What's wrong?

Is it okay to upgrade my GUS with 70ns RAMs, when the two I've got
there from Gravis are 60ns ones? Will it have any effect on GUS's
performance?

When I tried sampling through the line-in from a tape deck, I got a
lot of high-pitched noise although sampling with a mike (->the other
input jack) is very clear. A sample taken with a mike of music coming
out of a loudspeaker was actually much better than the same through
wires & line-in!

When I tried installing gus0035 - windows drivers from October, I
didn't get any midi sounds. Are there any newer drivers than that?

Many thanks.
I like GUS, though.
Emil.

Subject: Confused (problems?)

Greetings GUS-ers...

I recently upgraded my motherboard from a 386DX-40 to a
486DX2-66, and up until this switch my GUS was happily working just fine.

I'm a little confused at the whole thing.. I didn't change any settings
on my various cards (except for the fact that I bought a new Video card
to set off the new VLB motherboard... Diamond Stealth 24 VLB)

Anyway... Installation of the MB went pretty smoothly, a few tweaks here
and there to get optimum preformance and all that... I loaded up and
installed all the nice high-color graphics drivers for windoze, et cetra...

After all the fun, I decided to sit back and listen to some midi
files... Since I was still in Windoze, I loaded up the media player and
played a few MIDI files.. No problems...

I then tried it with Cakewalk PRO, again.. no problems...

I played a few mods with MODUS, and once again.. No problems...

THEN, I left windoze, and came back to the good old DOS domain... :)

NOW this is where the problems started... Any mod player, game,
playmidi, etc.. Locks up after a few moments of working... DMP plays
the first few notes then hangs solid.. Playmidi gets far enough to load
patches for the midi file, then bombs out.. DOOM gets to the zig-zag
room with the acid on Episode 1, level 1, then dumps all the sounds in
memory and freezes the game up.. Xwing (with MegaEm) gets to the "You
Must Register" screen, then locks up solid..

Up until these points, I get sound and everything *seems* okay...

What REALLY confuses me is that most DEMOS seem to run fine.. Second
Reality sounds AWESOME, and looks great on a DX2-66.. Crystal Dreams II
is smoother than ever on the chessboard screen... the DUST demo runs
great... Keboard lights keeping time to the music...

I thought that it might be a fluke or maybe just a glitch.. I ran
various diagnostics programs, MSD, Sysinfo from Norton, several other 3rd
party diags as well... Everything seems to check out okay...

No matter what, the games, modplayers, midiplayers, etc.. ALL crash on me..

DEMOS still work okay, and Windoze runs faster and smoother than ever...

My current system setup is:

486DX2-66 VLB (with USA1/SyS chipset)
4MB ram
Diamond Stealth 24 VLB
Connor 170MB HD
WesterDigital 40MB HD
Boca 14.4 internal modem
1MB GUS (220,5,5,11,7)
PAS-16 (d:5 q:7 s:1,220,1,5 m:0 j:0) (this setting never caused conflicts
before due to only one card being active at any given time... I don;t
think it is the culprit, but I'm willing to try anything... besides, the
PAS-16 still works fine... it's FM synth, but it works....)
SUP/IO IDE/Floppy/Serial/Parallel ISA controller
1.44mb floppy
1.2mb floppy

Joystick is disabled on both the GUS and the PAS, and I am using the
joystick port that came with the IO card...

If anyone has any clues/ideas/suggestions/etc.. Please either respond to
this, or drop me some email at:

ssarasin@nyx.cs.du.edu

Thanks for any and all help!!

Howdy!

I recently ftp'ed gusbos2b.zip from epas and I was wondering if anyone else
had tried toying with this program. The lack of documentation and the fact
that the copyright information listed "Sphincter Software" would seem to
indicate that the file in question is bogus. Since I ran the 7k executable,
I'm curious to know whether or not this is the case. I've run three different
virus scanners on the files contained in the zip, but so far I've been
unable to locate any viruses, trojans, etc. A quick scan of my HD using
Diskfix and Norton Disk Doctor failed to indicate anything out of the ordinary.
Any help (and thus piece of mind) that could be provided would be greatly
appreciated...

Sure. Get the sbgusfaq.zip file from archive.orst.edu or wuarchive. I have
been doing this SB/GUS thing for about a year now, and it has turned out to
be a great way to do things as far as games go.

A few quick hints:
1) Get an SB16 or SBPro. I don't know much about the compatible boards, except
I tried to help one person who had a lot of trouble making the GUS work with
a Thunderboard. PAS's work ok from what I have heard. I have an SBPro for
reference.

2) Run the GUS line out into the line in on the other board, and use the other
board's mixer to control the GUS volume. The GUS unfortunately has a rather
limited mixer in comparison with the SB compatible boards.

3) Load and unload SBOS or use the new Ultrinit (2.16) to float the AdLib ports
on the GUS since some games programmers use these ports to detect your SB.
(the new ultrinit does not float the registers for me, anyone care to help ?)

Same here. Tie fighter demo won't give me digital sound unless I select only
the SBPro and not the SB w/ GM.

I tried this too. Same behavior.

Yep.

True.

I've sqaushed about 95% of the bugs, most of the problems are still with
games. OS/2's MMPM works find with the SB, Linux works fine with both, as
does Windoze.

Your hard drive controller should be using IRQ 13, unless it's very
non-standard!

This is typical of someone operating out of blind fear. Very likely, the
power supply problem caused the I/O ports board problem and the GUS had
nothing to do with anything... but it sounds like you've already figured
that out.

Good luck. I don't have this information, but there are enough GUS'ers
out there using GUS' in machines likely older than yours that haven't had
this problem. Maybe you can simply tell him that.

SBOS V3.82 (GUS0039.ZIP)
----------
This is an update to V3.8 of SBOS (GUS0037) which was released
in January. It includes the following new features and fixes.

   - SBOS is now a COM file instead of an EXE saving a little space
   - An updated SBOS.BAT file is included which will properly load
the .COM file before the .EXE version of SBOS
   - Automatically loads into high memory if available
   - Restoring of Vector table fixed when unloading SBOS
   - No longer hooks the keyboard interupt
   - Updated online help. Type SBOS /?

Update to GUS0038 (GUS0040.ZIP/GUS0041.ZIP)
-----------------
You may have noticed that precussion through PLAYMIDI, ULTRAMID and
MIDIFIER sounded a little flat. These programs have been updated to
correct this problem.

ULTRINIT had some problems properly initializing a 2.4 UltraSound
card.

PLAYFILE had some difficulty with stero WAV files. It also did not
properly restore the vector table. Hence many programs would not
run correctly after this program was ran.

GUS0040 includes only the above files and is intended for those
of you who already have GUS0038 and just want the updated files.
GUS0041 is a complete re-release of GUS0038 include these new
updated files.

Gravis AIL/32 V1.4 (GAIL3214.ZIP)
------------------
We released this update a week ago. It includes a fix for the
same plastic precussion problem PLAYMIDI had. It also fixes a
divide by zero error which occured with some games.

About the Gravis Nodes
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
All nodes are independent BBSs', and are not run or sponsored by Gravis. As
such the logon procedures for each BBS may vary. For instance, some give
you immediate access, while others have a probation period which may last
several days. All nodes are encouraged to offer all the Gravis files and
messages to first time callers but this may not always be the case.

If you are interested in becoming an Authorized Gravis Node you may file
request or download GRAV-APP.ZIP from the Gravis BBS.

Subject: King's Quest on CDROM

Has anybody figured out a way to get either Mega-em or AIL to run with King's
Quest IV?

Mega-em's MIDI works brilliantly, but the SB emulation is clipped off after
about 1/2 second or so.

Later,
Jeff

My Ultrasound OS/2 drivers have been uploaded to ftp-os2.cdrom.com as
ultra01a.zip. They currently reside in pub/os2/incoming but will be
moved to pub/os2/2_1/mmedia.

Subject: mod players list

I'm in a flaming mood :) It was extremely annoying having to page through that list of MOD players. Some people have email quotas(as in the amount oof email they can receive before paying extra moolah). Sorry to have disappoint ya' buddy, but not everyone is into MOD's. Maybe you can put this list into your finger info for people to see. You could also ask the admins for the GUS newsletter to set up an address for your list of mod players(we send email to faq@dsd.es.com, and we get the gus faq back is an example). Sorry to jump over all of you :)

Subject: Mpeg for Windows ??

I've got two versions of mpeg viewer for windows. Both of them are
sharewares and one of them is from Xing. I do not why the Xing one could not
play mpeg correctly except the only mpeg which comes with the program, the
other one says it won't allow to play mpeg that are larger than 1 Mb.

Is there a shareware version of mpeg viewer for windows that can play
mpegs that are bigger than 1 Mb and can play them correctly. I only got dos
version of mpeg viewer and hope to find one for windows.

Thanks in advance!

haven't tried either of them, but I figured I'd let everyone know...I've

GUSOS201.ZIP is an installable MMPM for OS/2. It supports the WAV player,
system sounds, the Video player and any programs that use MMPM streams
such as DMPlayer and bigben2. It does not support recording, stereo,
MIDI and it does not share the GUS with DOS programs (it does not use
the audio VDD).

You might try playing with PATCH.EXE - the somewhat intractable DOS patch
editor, found (I think) in gusdknnn.zip (nnn=201??) - the software
development kit. Also see Francois Dion's tutorials, one of which
is in patchkit.arj.

The patches themselves allow a 6 point envelope, with various controls
over looping, sustain etc. PMaker Lite just comes with a couple of
preset ones. I think that you can only have a single looping section
of wave though. I have yet to see a full explanation of how the
six points in the envelope are used depending on the settings for
loop, sustain etc. Let us know if you find such an explanation.

Subject: Police Quest 4, GUS, and Windows

Has anyone been able to install PQ4 (disk version) through windows and get
the GUS drivers to load the correct patches when starting the game?

I have tried loading various midi files and then starting the game, and
though I get music, I am certain I am not getting everything. The music
sounds different (different mix of instuments) depending which midi file I
load.

Do I need a patch?

Regards,

gary

Subject: SB's and GUS

As there were two requests about this, here's my two-pennorth...

I've got a SB clone set up with the default IRQ's, DMA's etc (many games
have these hard-wired, with no way to change them), and a GUS set up
(using the advanced option in GUSSETUP) with non-default values. I
haven't bothered trying SBOS since I put my clone back in, and Megaem was
_very_ flaky (I can't remember if it worked at all) until I switched off
the SB digital emulation. I haven't dared trying to play the GUS through
the SB as I'm not sure if the SB has a mono line in: resulting in my
shorting out the GUS's DAC's. I did try playing the SB through the GUS
but failed.

Hope this helps

Mark
