No doubt when the Lottery was announced people sat down and started to write predictor programs for it. After all, how difficult can it be to pick six numbers between 1 and 50? I decided to pitch two predictors against the good old fashioned 'guess the number' method. The first came from "!Lottery" by J. Rowbottom and the second from "UK Lottery Random Number Generator" by R. Scott (from the April'95 Arc World cover- disc). The numbers chosen were: "!Lottery" 5 16 17 29 31 38, "UK" 6 11 13 32 34 37 and my own 3 07 21 25 31 47.

"!Lottery" requires you to enter details of previous draws and from these results picks repeating numbers, or hot numbers as they are known, and from these gives you what it thinks will be the big ones. "UK Lottery Random Number Generator" however is totally random and will give you six different numbers. The final method was a combination of phone numbers and dates of births and lots of sums. Here are the numbers which the nice people at Camelot came up with: 9 18 19 24 31 41 +21. Well, "!Lottery" got one number, the "UK Lottery Random Number Generator" got zilch and me own private top secret formula got one number. It's strange that the same correct number pred- icted was 31.

Although these programs may hold the answer the lottery is a game, and half the fun is choosing the numbers. The PD programs are fine and (dare I say it) a novelty. Will these programs catch on and if so, will they get any numbers right?

"I had the pleasure to show Photodesk to about 40 People during the Swiss Acorn Club event last week-end. Every- body was very impressed by the intuitive nature and how fast it is." Ralf Zenklusen, Evolution trading ag.

"I have to say that this package is, in my opinion, by far and away the best retouching software available on the Acorn platform, and compares very favourably with top end software on other platforms, especially in it's speed and flexibility...

Adobe's flagship is certainly not the be-all and end-all of retouching. Photodesk wins hands-down in many areas." Dr. Anwar, Alternative Publishing

"The clone effect is magic, it's almost worth the price just to see it in action." W. Bramham, Eureka [who obviously got his copy free as well]

"On occasion, deep into the night I have been found asleep across the desk top following a prolonged bout with your confounded programme. If it is your company policy to persist in producing software of such high calibre, you might be decent enough to include a Government Health Warning on the outside of the box!" T M Rickets
