THE CODERING - ISSUE #1 - BIWEEKLY CODING COMPETITION

 What is TC ?

The Codering is a coding competition, maintained by cd and Inopia. It's
similar to tracking compos like The Trackering (go figure:) and Cruelization,
but instead of samples, you are given a theme which you must use in your
effect. Every issue has a duration of two weeks. In the first week, the
contestants create their entries. The second week is the voting week. A voting
pack is then released, containing all productions. The public can download
this, and cast their vote. Every issue has two sets of rules. Fixed rules, and
special rules. The fixed rules are the same every issue, but the special rules
only apply for that specific issue.

 The Codering, issue 1

Since this is the first issue, this is a try-out. any rules may be changed
after this, so please check the fixed rules every time. If you have ideas or
criticism, you can of course contact us, and we can do something about it.
(contacts are at the bottom of the text).

 Fixed rules:

- The program must NOT damage the HD *
- The program must NOT write to the HD
- No virii *
- No sounds/music
- 100k size limit (exe+data)
- ANY language allowed
- Entry must be EXE or COM (BASIC files must be compiled)
- External data files allowed
- NO code ripping *
- Must exit to OS properly
- MCGA support required.
- Higher resolutions allowed (by detection), but entry must still support MCGA.
- No mouse/joystick/keyboard interaction, except for exit. (press any key
to exit ... shit like that)
- MUST vote or be disqualified
- EXE compressors allowed (pmwlite for pmode/w, pklite, wwpack, etc).

If you do not follow the rules, you will be disqualified. If you break any of
the rules marked with an * you will be disqualified on the grounds enforced by
the organizers. (ie possibly for a few months if serious.)

 Theme - TC#1

You must code a starfield. This can be parallax, 3D, or anything you wish, as
long as it is a starfield. If you don't know how to code a starfield, here's
a hint for 3d conversions:

  TX=256*X DIV Z
  TY=256*Y DIV Z

We try to keep it as simple as possible. If you don't find this to be enough
of a challenge, be creative and make it one!

Another special rule: only 1 effect per entry! (no effect switches).

A hint: For this compo, if you're dying to do something interesting, you can
add full 360 degree rotations, x/y/z plane rotations, motion blur, or whatever
else you have up your sleeve, as long as it is still a starfield and follows
all applicable rules.

                                 ENTRANCE!

The first compo will start early, just to get the word around...It starts
on Thursday, December 26th. All entries must be in by Sunday, January 5th,
1997 (w0op!) at 0:00 GMT. (7PM EST I think.)

You will be required to fill out an entry form and send it with your entry
executable and source (if stated in the entrance form for that compo. The source
will only be required for certain compos..if we ever hold a compo for 3d or
something having engines or tricks you don't want to give out, we won't require
sources). We're trying to do this on the measure that you don't rip.

The entrance form is "TCxx.frm". ZIP this with your entry and MIME/UUE it to
cd@kosmic.com or cyb@inetnebr.com.

Once we recieve all of the entries, we will distribute on IRC and FTP. FTP
sites will probably include ftp.arosnet.se and ftp.cdrom.com. If you would
like to dcc, we will probably have the entries on anothernet (neato.org) and
euronet. "cd" will be on anothernet and "rabbi_cd" will be on euronet for
xdcc.

Once you have the voting pack, fill out the voting form (TCxx.vot) and email
it to cd@kosmic.com or cyb@inetnebr.com. Results will be released one week
after the initial coding part is finished.
