INTRODUCTION
============

ALL moves and fatalities listed are now confirmed. All are guaranteed to
work 100% of the time. This list is for version 1.0 through 1.4
machines. Moves and fatalities for the new version 1.4 machine are now
included and are marked with [1.4+]. I'm a little hesitant to add a few
things until version 2.0 chips come out, so this guide might look
incomplete until that point.

If you have any additions send mail directly to me and I will include it
in the next guide. Moves and fatalities posted to rec.games.video.arcade
and alt.games.mk will also be incorporated into this guide. Credit will
be given to those who contribute. This will be posted every WEDNESDAY
until all the moves and fatalities are discovered. Keep in mind that
this is posted ONCE a WEEK, and some moves may not be on the latest
revision.

For those of you with Internet access, you can finger me at my e-mail
address for the latest revision of the guide. There is NO MAILING LIST,
but I will honor requests for the guide. Do NOT ask me to send the new
revision before Wednesday. Do NOT ask me to add your name to the credit
list, unless you have something new to offer.

Andy Eddy of GamePro magazine has generously offered to make this guide
available through FTP. The site is netcom.com, and the directory is
pub/vidgames/faqs.  Thanks Andy!

RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE FAQ
===========================

     o Nothing new on this one, just a few minor corrections. Once I
have the 2.0 or 2.1 chips in my area, things will start to expand.

     o The format is a combination of the original guide and the
original MK FAQ by Lei Wang. Sections added are rumors, basic
definitions (for the fighting game impaired), things to try, and
individual combos. Sections which will be added in the future are
retaliation, strategy vs. human and computer, story line, game texts, and
game version information. Hopefully most of these will be on the next
revision. A mini-guide will also be posted along with the main guide,
containing a brief description on how to execute the moves.

***************** General Definitions and Moves *****************
*************************************************************************

===================
GENERAL DEFINITIONS
===================

While reading through the moves, the + can be substituted by and, and the
- can be substituted by then. For example, 'two forward - HIGH PUNCH'
should be read as 'press the joystick twice towards the opponent then
press HIGH PUNCH'. Another example, 'LOW PUNCH + BLOCK' should be read
as 'press LOW PUNCH and BLOCK at the same time'. Button names are listed
in all caps.

Quarter-Circle Towards: Rotate joystick from the down position to the
                         forward position then press the button
                         indicated. (actual movement is down - down to
                         forward - BUTTON)
Quarter-Circle Away : Rotate joystick from the down position to the
                         away position then press the button indicated.
                         (actual movement is down - down to away -
                         BUTTON)

Half-Circle Towards: Rotate joystick from the away position to the
                      forward/down position then press the button
                      indicated. (actual movement is away - away to
                      forward/down - BUTTON) **
Half-Circle Away : Rotate joystick from the forward position to the
                      away/down position then press the button indicated.
                      (actual movement is forward - forward to
                      away/down - BUTTON) **

** (note: You may only have to move the joystick from the forward/down
    position to the away/down position for the half-circle moves. This
    would mean moving the joystick from SW to SE, or SE to SW, and
    pressing the button.)

hold then release: Press and hold the button indicated while your
                    character charges. When finished charging release
                    the button. Other actions may be performed while
                    charging. You can also charge a move before a round
                    begins.

(hold BLOCK): Block is only used in a move or fatality to stabilize your
               fighter, and to keep them from jumping or moving backwards
               or forwards. Make sure you release BLOCK before pressing
               a required button. You do not need to use block if you
               can be at the right distance for a fatality.

down - up: The teleport can also be down by flicking the joystick down,
            making the joystick spring up and down.

Thanks to Henry Tam for helping to write this strategy. Look for a LOT
more in the next revision, hopefully I will have 2.0 chips by then. I
will not put a lot of effort into writing a big strategy guide for a test
version.

=====================
FIGHTING THE COMPUTER
=====================

Since there are many ways to beat the computer, I will just describe the
most common and effective ways. If you have different ways to beat
the computer, please post them and we will try to add them to the FAQ.

Generally, the early jump kicks that used to work in MK do not work
in MKII anymore. They still work on low level opponents(the first guy
and may be the second guy) but once you get up to a higher level, the
computer will block and retaliate(it either throws you or kick you
before you land). If you get thrown, jump back as soon as you get up
or you will be thrown again. Also, do not throw a missile when you are
within jump-kick range. The computer will jump kick you as soon as
you throw a missile.

Basic strategies:

1. Getting out of a corner.
   There are times when you screw up and end up in a corner. Do not
   panic. Crouch and wait for the cpu to approach. When the cpu is
   within sweep range but out of his/her throw range, jump over
   him/her. Kick him/her as soon as you character turns around.
   Often times the cpu will not block it. If it blocks the kick, do
   an fan throw if you are Kitana. Otherwise, try to block the
   retaliation. Then jump back a few times immediately.

2. Use the turn-around kick(TAK) often.
   The computer does not block a TAK 70% of the time. Use it to your
   advantage. It hits, follow up with a missile weapon. If the
   computer blocks it, throw a fan if you are Kitana, or do a high
   fireball if you are Liu Kang.

3. Use Shang Tsung.
   You can use him to beat most of the computer opponents and even
   Shao Kahn if you can morph quickly. Jump back once or twice at the
   beginning of the round and do two fireballs as soon as you land.
   Do two fireballs continuously and sooner of later, the computer
   will get hit. Even if the computer is within jump-kick range, it
   will not jump kick you as long as you throw two fireballs. Three
   fireballs are good at times but they take more time to recover. Never
   throw a single fireball.
   To beat Kintaro, do high punches continuously. If he walks into
   them, he will take blocking damage and block for the rest of the
   round. If he doesn't walk into them, continue to do high punches
   until there are four seconds left on the clock. Then jump back and
   do two fireballs. He will block them and might try to stomp
   on you. Jump backward with a hop kick immediately to avoid the
   stomp.  Easy victory.

4. Use Liu Kang.
   For some reason, the computer enjoys getting hit by Liu Kang's
   flying kick or simply ducks under it. Just keep doing that back
   and forth while you are charging for the bicycle kick. Do a
   bicycle kick once a while and the computer will get hit(better to do
   it from close range). I don't know how to beat the bosses with him
   though.

5. Use Scorpion.
   His TAK then harpoon combo works very well. I don't know how to
   beat the bosses with him though.

6. Use Kitana.
   Her jump kick then air fan throw combo is very effective even if
   the jump kick is blocked. I don't know how to beat the bosses with
   her though.

7. Use Reptile.
   He is not very effective against the computer but it is fun to use
   him against low level opponents. Do an energy ball from far away
   and often times, the computer will not react and keep walking
   forward. When he gets hit by the ball, do your combo of choice.
   However, he might throw a missile at you as soon as you do an energy
   ball. If that happens, do an energy ball again and the computer
   will not react the second time or the third time.

8. Use Mileena.
   The computer is a sucker for her air Sais. Jump up and throw an
   air sais right before you land(so that your sais will hit the top of
   his/her head). The computer does not block it most of the time.

================
FIGHTING KINTARO
================

Kintaro is nearly impossible to beat without using a pattern or repeated
punches. One 'strategy' is to continually hit LOW PUNCH after hitting
Kintaro once. If you do this Kintaro will just stand there until you
stop pressing LOW PUNCH. The best example of this is to do Liu Kang's
bicycle kick at the beginning of the round, and if it hits, press LOW
PUNCH until time runs out. If you get in the right spot, you can punch
Kintaro to death while he is taking blocking damage.

With Sub-Zero, freeze Kintaro and push him into the corner. Low punch
until dead. He takes better than blocking damage this way.

Another not-so-cheesy way of beating Kintaro is to use Raiden. As he
approaches you, do the lighting. He will try to grab you, but he's just
out of range and he'll get hit by the lightning. Repeatedly do that
until he jumps, then jump back and kick him as he is coming down.
Continue with the lighting. If you are nearing the corner, you can
teleport to get away from him if he jumps.

Shao Kahn is not nearly as hard as Kintaro. You can do the old freeze-
uppercut pattern until he dies. Punches work good against him as well.

==============
GENERAL COMBOS
==============

     o Jump Kick - Sweep: If you are fighting against the computer,
you can usually follow a jump kick with a foot sweep. The sweep will hit
them as they hit the ground.

     o Sweep - Throw: After hitting a human opponent with a sweep,
you can sometimes get in a throw, even if they are blocking down and
away. This works best if you are playing with Baraka or one of the
females. You can also get in a throw after hitting them with moves other
than the sweep, such as a jump kick or roundhouse. This only works with
some of the characters, and it definitely does not work against the
computer.

     o Jump Kick - Hop Kick: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do a hop kick. This works for some of the characters,
including Sub-Zero and the two females. Not sure if it works for
everyone or against everyone.

     o Jump Kick - Missile Weapon: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the missile weapon. It is important to kick them low and
deep so you can land on the ground quickly and fire your missile weapon.
Be sure to buffer the move right before you jump kick if you can.

========
LIU KANG
========

     o Jump Kick - Flying Kick: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the flying kick. Start the two forward motion right
before you hit, then quickly press HIGH KICK. Sometimes if you do the
flying kick to fast you will go over your opponent.

     o Hop Punch - Standard Fireball: Hop punch your opponent in the
air and immediately do the standard fireball. Start the two forward
motion right before you hit, then quickly press HIGH PUNCH.

     o Jump Kick - Bicycle Kick: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the bicycle kick. Be sure to charge the bicycle kick a
few seconds before you jump. Wait until you land on the ground before
releasing LOW KICK, otherwise the bicycle kick will not work.

     o Jump Kick - Standard Fireball - Low Fireball: Jump kick your
opponent and immediately do a high fireball. Start the two forward
motion right before you hit, then quickly press HIGH PUNCH. If you are
fighting the computer, you can follow the standard fireball with a ground
fireball, which the computer will not block.

========
KUNG LAO
========

     o Jump Kick - Hat Throw: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the hat throw. Be sure to guide the hat down so it hits
the falling opponent.

===========
JOHNNY CAGE
===========

     o Jump Kick - Shadow Kick: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the shadow kick.

     o Jump Kick - Shadow Uppercut: Jump kick you opponent low and
immediately do the shadow uppercut. This only works in the corner, looks
like it is impossible otherwise.

     o Jump Kick - Low Bolt: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the low green bolt. After starting the jump kick, keep
the joystick in the away position, so you can quickly do the half-circle
motion right after you hit.

     o Ball Breaker - Turn Around Kick - Shadow Kick: Do the ball
breaker against your opponent. Immediately jump over the groaning victim
and kick them low as you turn to face the other direction. Follow this
with the shadow kick.

=======
REPTILE
=======

     o Jump Kick - Acid Spit: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the acid spit. Start the two forward motion right before
you hit, then quickly press HIGH PUNCH.

     o Force Ball - Two Punches - Hop Kick: Do the force ball move
on your opponent. If they get hit by it, do two high punches as they are
coming towards you. After the punches do a hop kick. You need to be in
the right place for the high punches to connect, and it may take
practice.

========
SUB-ZERO
========

     o Jump Kick - Slide: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the slide. Just like the original.

     o Jump Kick - Hop Kick - Slide: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do a hop kick, followed by the slide. Easiest when your
opponent is frozen.

===========
SHANG TSUNG
===========

     o Flaming Skulls: If you can catch your opponent in the air
with the first one, there is a good chance that the other two will hit.
Do the three skulls before your opponent jumps towards or away from you.

     o Jump Kick - Flaming Skull: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do one flaming skull. Start the two back motion right before
you kick, then press HIGH PUNCH. This one is hard as Shang Tsungs
fireball travels slow. Multiple skulls after the jump kick may be
possible.

======
KITANA
======

     o Jump Kick - Fan Throw: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the fan throw. Start the two forward motion right before
you kick, then press both punch buttons. If you are fighting the
computer and they block your jump kick, the fan throw will usually hit.

     o Jump Kick - Fan Throw - Hop Kick: Jump kick your opponent low
and immediately do the fan throw. Start the two forward motion right
before you kick, then press both punch buttons. If you connect on the
first jump kick and get the fan out fast, you can also hop kick your
opponent as the are falling down.

     o Jump Kick - Fan Lift: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the fan lift. Start the three back motion right before
you hit, then quickly press HIGH PUNCH. You must do the fan lift
immediately, or it will not catch the falling opponent. Follow this with
the next combo.

     o Fan Lift - Jump Kick - Fan Throw - Hop Kick: Catch the
opponent with the fan lift and wait until they are near the top. Walk
forward as far as you can then do a jump kick, catching the opponent as
they are falling down. Immediately do the fan throw, quickly followed by
a hop kick. If your opponent is fairly close or near the corner, you
could do a regular jump kick instead of a hop kick for the last move.

     o Fan Lift - Jump Kick - Fan Throw - Uppercut: Opponent must be
near the corner. Catch the opponent with the fan lift and wait until
they are near the top. Walk forward as far as you can then do a jump
kick, catching the opponent as they just are released from the wave.
Immediately do the fan throw. As the are falling down do an uppercut.

==============
JACKSON BRIGGS
==============

     o Overhead Hammer - Uppercut: The overhead hammer will stun the
opponent momentarily. You can follow this with any move, such as an
uppercut or gotcha grab.

     o Jump Kick - Energy Throw: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the energy throw. After starting the jump kick, keep the
joystick in the forward position, so you can quickly do the half-circle
motion right after you hit.

     o Jump Kick - Gotcha Grab: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the gotcha grab. Start the two forward motion right
before you hit, then quickly press LOW PUNCH. Jax will grab air if not
done quickly enough.

=======
MILEENA
=======

     o Jump Kick - Throwing Sais: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the throwing sais. You will need to charge the move
before you jump. Immediately after hitting with the jump kick, release
HIGH PUNCH.

     o Hop Kick - Throwing Sais - Teleport Kick: Hop kick your
opponent as they jump towards you and immediately throw the sais. As
soon as you hit on the hop kick release HIGH PUNCH. After the sais hit
do the teleport kick.

======
BARAKA
======

     o Jump Kick - Blue Bolt: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the blue bolt. After starting the jump kick, keep the
joystick in the down position, so you can quickly do the quarter-circle
motion right after you hit.

     o Jump Kick - Blade Fury: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the blade fury. Start the three back motion right before
you hit, then quickly press LOW PUNCH. If you do not connect with the
blade fury, you are left vulnerable for an attack.

========
SCORPION
========

     o Jump Kick - Spear: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the spear. Start the two back motion right before you
hit, then quickly press LOW PUNCH.

     o Jump Kick - Leg Grab: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the leg grab. After starting the jump kick, keep the
joystick in the forward position, so you can quickly do the half-circle
motion right after you hit.

     o Jump Kick - Air Throw: Jump kick your opponent low and deep,
then immediately do the air throw by repeatedly pressing BLOCK.

     o Teleport Punch - Spear: Teleport punch your opponent and
immediately spear. This will work best if you catch the opponent in the
air with the teleport punch, making it easier to spear them before they
hit the ground.

     o Teleport Punch - Leg Grab: Teleport punch your opponent and
immediately do the leg grab. This will work best if you catch the
opponent in the air with the teleport punch, making it easier to leg grab
them just as they hit the ground.

     o Turn Around Kick - Teleport Punch - Spear: Do a turn around
kick on your opponent and immediately do the teleport punch. If you
connect on the teleport punch throw the spear, and finish with an
uppercut.

======
RAIDEN
======

     o Jump Kick - Body Launch: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the body launch.

     o Hop Kick/Punch - Body Launch: Hop kick/punch your opponent in
the air and immediately do the body launch.

     o Jump Kick - Lightning: Jump kick your opponent low and
immediately do the lightning. After starting the jump kick, keep the
joystick in the down position, so you can quickly do the quarter-circle
motion right after you hit.

     o Electric Grab - Two Punches - Body Launch: As Raiden lets go
of the opponent after the electric grab, punch twice. This will pop them
into the air, which can be followed by the body launch.

RUMORS
======

     o Rumors coming out of the AMOA show suggest the possibility of
up to three hidden characters. Kano or Sonya could be one of these
hidden characters, as they are no longer selectable fighters. They were
said to be chained to the background on one of the test versions of MKII,
but were not seen in release versions. There is also a rumor that they
are now there again, in the 2.0 chips.

     o One of Sub-Zero's fatalities is he freezes the space directly
above you, which then falls on the victim, crushing them.

     o There is a minimum of forty-nine fatalities. This would be on
the 2.0 chips I assume.

Here is some info I received from Steven P C on the latest chips:

Diversions in Chicago got a test chip on Thursday which contains version 1.6.
I've played it, and there's not much difference in playability between 1.4 &
1.6, except:

     o When fighting the computer, it actually goes through a random order,
so that you can start off fighting Mileena, then Reptile, then Raiden, ...
instead of Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, ...

     o The computer will do a fatality on you (though not very often, I'd
say probably 5% of the time). Had it happen to me, playing against Cage in the
upper levels; did his old uppercut fatality on me, but it wasn't spectacular.

     o In Raiden's victory pose, lightning now comes out of the sky
accompanied by a loud *boom* of thunder. Scared the hell out of me first time I
saw and heard it (it's *very* loud)

     o If you're lucky you might get Johnny Cage to do a *red* shadow kick
instead of a green one. Either it's a bug, or it's one of those Ryu-red-
fireball one-in-a-hundred flukes.

     o There is an uppercut fatality to the Pit II now. Jax launched
someone (Liu Kang) into the pit. Same falling motion, except then it flashes to
an aerial view of you falling, then you go *splat* against a stone floor and
make a very disgusting impression.

     o Kung Lao apparently walks faster, between his old speed and the
women's speed. Mileena and Baraka shoot their 'fireballs' slower. Reptile now
has the slide move like Sub-Zero.

     o Kintaro shoots fireballs! He spits them at you. Also he does a
mini- version of his air launch, hopping in place then jumping toward you. Also
he now air launches whenever he wants, not after you shoot something at him.

     o Shao Kahn taunts you. He points his finger at you and says, "You
will die" or "Feel the wrath of Shao Kahn". Makes him very vulnerable, IMBHO
(in my brother's humble opinion :) Kahn's shoulder charge is now a shadow
charge like Cage's shadow kick, but Kahn's is blue.

     o When Shao Kahn dies, the screen flashes like MK I and centers on
Kahn. Then the backgrounds cycle while Kahn dies, until finally on a black
background he turns to stone and explodes. Then the arena background returns,
and it goes through a spiel of "The Rule of Shao Kahn is Over" and "You are
again the Supreme Mortal Kombat Warrior!!!"

     o My brother claims he's finished the game with everyone except
Reptile and Johnny Cage. In the endings, Kitana is not really Mileena's
twin sister and Mileena is really a clone made by Shang Tsung and the
sorcerer-monks plus Mileena is Baraka's girlfriend and they become King
and Queen of the Outworld. (he won't tell me any other endings, yet...)

=============
THINGS TO TRY
=============

     o Use Shang Tsung to get up onto the ceiling. One of the
players must be Tsung, and the other one of the females. As Tsung throws
one fireball, try to throw him with the female. If you succeed, she
should throw Shang Tsung up onto the ceiling, where he can do his normal
moves and fatalities.

     o Try throwing the computer. Good luck! It is impossible, even
when the opponent is frozen or dizzy. Try to throw them after you beat
them. They will just pick you up and toss you, then fall over.
Apparently you CAN throw the computer on a 1.4. Still don't know if you
can block them from throwing you though.

     o Try the fatalities in the air. Liu Kang can do his dragon
fatality in the air. Can others? Also, try Reptile's fatality as he is
invisible.

Here are some things to try from icardena@sumter.cso.uiuc.edu:

     o Powerball + Fatality: This one's weird. Immediately after
releasing a powerball do the fatality. The victim will bounce towards
you from the powerball but the fatality will still work. The tongue
pushes the victim back into range and proceeds as normal. Only thing is
Reptile's head was about a centimeter to the left of his neck when the
fatality was finished...bizarre.

     o Victim must be Reptile or Shang morphed into Reptile. Reptile
must be invisible. Kill Reptile while he is invisible with a leg grab.
Reptile will still be invisible. Back up and do the fatality. Scorpion
will Breathe fire onto (the invisible) Reptile. You hear the scream and
the there is an explosion of bones engulfed in flames. Cool part: after
the bones settle an image of the skeleton will appear where Reptile was
standing, frozen in mid-explosion!

     o Victim must be Reptile or Shang morphed into Reptile.
Reptile must be invisible. Morph into Scorpion. Time your morph (in
v1.1Shang remains morphed for 12 seconds) so that you will change return
to Shang just after you execute Scorpion's leg throw. Reptile will
still be invisible. Morph into Reptile and perform the fatality.
Reptile (Shang) will do the fatality as normal but the victim will not
have a body. The head being eaten seems to appear from thin air. After
the fatality everything is visible. ( I can't take credit for this
particular fatality. It was performed by a friend of mine as I watched.
Thanx Dan )
