=====! demo !==================================================================

Super luxus lemmen paketti by MFX (party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at Elevator 2000

        System requirements:
          Vesa-compatible videocard, midas-compatible soundcard,
and only 350 KB HD! made for DOS, "might not work under multimedia
platforms" but runs fine with Win98 (at least for me)

        The demo:
I was very happy to see that Elevator 2000 had resulted in over
10 demos, several of well-known groups like MFX, Doomsday, Calodox
& TPOLM, ... I was also surprised, cause usually the smaller parties
have only around 3 to 6 demos (the result-file says there were 200
        visitors: 143 boys, 16 girls and 41 organizers/vips. Apparently
orgos are neither male nor female :)). The winner was MFX, but when
I saw the download-size, I noticed their demo was only 180 KB zipped!
Eiks! Joke-demo alert! But to my relief, Super Luxus is far from a
joke-demo. It's a small but excellent mood-demo in an experimental
style. To start, the design is randomized: every time you see it,
the order of the parts is different, the timings, the movement of
the objects... The main effect consists of wire-framed objects,
drawn with very strange lines. Instead of solid or anti-aliased
lines, which try to be as smooth as possible, here the lines are
more blocky. It looks as if several pixels are replaced by
pseudo-massive squares: solid in the middle, more transparent at
the edges. The size of these squares varies, sometimes they're
single pixels, resulting in smooth lines, sometimes they're as
large as the whole line. That may sounds ugly, but believe me:
it looks great, almost as if the lines are alive. The objects are
also simple: a stream of cubes, a ring of spheres, a rotating
cog-wheel, a matrix-like collection of cubes with one invisible
black monolith rotating in them... The demo switches randomly
between these parts, but synced to the music. There are also some
effects: sometimes the screen gets blocky as a whole, like the face
of someone on TV who wants to stay anonymous, but here the effect
starts and stops fluidly. Another effect will be recognized by
everyone who ever coded a buggy fire or blur: when you forget to
divide your averaged color, you add more color to the screen then
you removed. As a result, your fire doesn't fade out, but grows with
a lot of overflow-flicker in the middle. The whole demo uses only
two color schemes: the first is blue with a bit of green, and
halfway it switches to red with yellow at a corner.
The music is more then half of the demos size, and more then
half of the demos power. I know I suck at describing music
accurately, but here I have to try: it starts with the sound of a
train or some machine, that keeps going in the background during
the whole demo. Then a repetitive drumline comes in that seems
simple at first, but isn't really. Now and then, a melodic
instrument plays a short, slow tune that fades out very slowly
and which is balanced by two loud hits. And that's it.
Minimalistic, but very peacefull in a way. There's a part where you
here only the drums and the train, long enough to make you sleepy,
you think it's almost over. And then bang! bang! two loud hits,
the colors change and it keeps going on. Really very great.

        Worth the download ?
Absolutely! Such a nice demo in only 350 KB, that's almost too
good to be true. Not everyone will like this style, but please,
try it. And try it a few times, because the randomized design has
its flaws: sometimes a part with little or no movement, or only one
line, stays on the screen for 10 seconds (yawn). Also, unless you
have a superdeluxus PIII, it's a bad idea to change the screen
resolution in the demo.ini file. I tried :), but the framerate
is too slow combined with the pulsing, the smaller pixels make
the objects too thin and the title and minimalistic background
are messed up :( So keep it at 320*240. Some irritating details
are the fact that you have to press escape to exit the demo when
it's ended, and the name that's way too long :) But hey, there are
few demos I like to see three times in a row, but Super luxus lemmen
paketti is one of them. May randomized-but-still-good-looking design
        become a trend!
                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

The question of last week was quite about this intro corner, right?
("Name the best intro of 1999"). So, here is a short list about the
public opinion; can be taken as a tiny chart, too.
I added some further information to the pure titles of the intros,
and an FTP download path, in case you have not seen one
and would like to check it out.

Most of them have already been reviewed here in the Demojournal,
except for the following: Fukwit Daddy, Disclone, Void3,
Public Demand and Nonstop. In the following Demojournals you will
probably be reading about these ones. Well, Nonstop will be left
out, except for the case Teo lends me his Amiga :)
By the way, these "favourites" are often the most well-known ones.
In the future I will also try to review the better releases from
        smaller parties, too.
I'd love to get ideas on who the prey for the intro reviews should
be (you can even send the review, of course :), and also some more
comments on the reviews. Just send an email.

Oh, and just one thing more.
There is a new site dedicated to intros; it is called Sodium Spray:

                                                                        gekko

=====! music !=================================================================

	"lost2000-reflection" by Scaldor / NOISE
"tjiccli EP" by	esem (stereoman) / NOISE
"the effort" by Andreas Saag / NOISE
"gaylab (lackluster reconstruct)" by Ceniq+Lackluster / MILK

I know that it is unusual to review together tracks that
have nothing common except their style, but well :)
It's a fantastic trip to a world of electronic and ambient
music. First is a track by Scaldor. I've listened to it while
watching planestate (screensaver) and it fit perfectly. It has
spaceish electronical sound with influences from Vangelis, but
later it turns out more to industrial. Excellent track for
listening on the quiet evening in the darkened room.
tjiccli is a sort of comeback of good old stereoman. It's
ambient planes are extended by dance beats and wild distance
alike melodies overlapped by influences of his own. Seems I
start to love his music again. Great release after long time
(haven't heard lascalla yet, but ps says it's superb).
the effort is a kind of mix between weird electronical music
and dnb. It's drumlines are fast and they would belong more
to mentioned dnb, but their instrumentation changes the sound
of track to electronical and this transformation gets done
completely by filtered noisy samples and very nice and strange
	melody. Very good track.
today's last track is #3 of gaylab ep. And Esa did it again,
he created a beautifull ambient track with soft melodies and
	some percussion. Great.
All listed songs are great - actually they are first tracks
after audiophonik (still listening this little silver thing)
that have excited me. So go on and enjoy them.
                                                                       tryhuk

=====! question !==============================================================

        > are these new 3d acc demos good or bad?

most of them are really bad :)
        -suckho

        Which new 3d acc demos???
If they are fast enough. Like Kasparov.
But if you make me a Really fast in code software demo,
then I will be more obsessed than 3d acc..
        -Optimus

just like regular demos there are a few bad ones, a few good ones
and a whole lot of mediocre ones.
        -Sagacity

        codename chinadoll is pretty good.
most of them lack sync and don't have enough in them. also some of
them are really messy. i'm disappointed now that i've seen most of
        them.
        -distance

it rocks, and it is yet only a start.
we are watching the rise of a new style of demos, for those who
missed the start of the demo scene in the 80's and the rise of the
PC scene in 90's, this is an exciting priviliege that they must be
happy and proud to watch, and more, to take a part of it.
        -gandalf

it's good that people try to support special hardware again!
try to get the latest thing out of the cards and stuff..
but: too many new cards, too less time to finish everything..
to less people have the latest hardware, so i still prefer good
old non-accelerated demos.. everybody can watch them and have fun...
        -Unlock

        they are GOOD
        -steffo

let me think...=] they are bad for me because i haven't got
a fast machine. i prefer watching oldskool demos for dos.
        they really kick az!
somethimes better than the new 3d acc demos!
        -GoRo

See Contour by TBL and decide on your own...
        -Malte

They are just another step in the art of demomaking.
Years ago to make demos meant 'to code demos'.
Now, due to all those openGL and stuff, to make demos means 'to
design demos'. And it's only up to the groups wheter they make good
or bad use of this change...
The fact is the new demos seem to be less and less stylish :(
(sounds like a good beginning of an 'is the scene dead' article) ;)
        -RadXcell

some are good, some are bad
        -byter

Some are good. Most are bad.
But it's the same as regular nonaccdemos.
        -baloo

the ones that requires TNT2 only sucks bigtime =)
        -xcene

        bad
        -"Erik Faye-Lund"

        codename chinadoll is good.
        -melwyn

There are some good 3D accellerated stuff, but in many of them has
ugly and illogical camera moving and perspectives. Just look the
Sunflower (by Pulse, but it isn't a 3D accellerated demo).
The target is always in the center.
        -aries

Time goes on and so does the demoscene.
We don't have to be oldfashioned.
        -Los

good, since i have a voodooII and hardly play games
still, i don't think that there is allready a demo that couldn't
        be made without 3d-acc
        -DJefke

        very very evil question.
-"Markus Pasula" [ed: droid/haujobb i think..]
