+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+

REBUTTAL TO LAN MAGAZINE ARTICLE ABOUT LANPROTECT

In a recent LAN Magazine article "NLM Shark Feeds on Server,"
LANProtect received some negative publicity. The article stated:

"Nanu Swamy, of Micropolis Limited in Singapore, ran the
LANProtect NLM on his NetWare 3.11 server to keep the virus
population at bay. Version 1.0 of the program began to destroy
the data it was intended to protect." Later in the article it
states that the problem will be resolved in version 1.5.

The fact is that LANProtect, in its first release (version 1.0), did
have a bug that would manifest itself as described in the article.
The problem only surfaced in very specific circumstances that
involved Macintosh/Novell installations, and only occurred at two
sites - an admitted problem, but far from being an "NLM Shark."
Furthermore, the bug has been fixed in v1.5 which has now been
      shipping since July.

The circumstances that caused version 1.0 to behave erratically were
never widely encountered. First, Novell's "Macintosh Named Spaces"
would have to have been added to the Netware Server Volumes. This
Novell service allows Macintosh files to exist on the Netware
Volumes. Also, the Novel Macintosh NLM would have to be loaded,
which allows Macintosh workstations to communicate with Netware
servers. In addition , the short-term memory allocation pool on that
server must have been configured at less than about 2 megabytes.
Given these circumstances, a chain of events could occur, after a
number of times of starting and unloading the LANProtect scanning
process, that would erroneously detect each file that was scanned as
having a virus. The file would be copied to a secured directory and
the original file would be deleted.

This problem was first discovered at Novell, since they were using
the product with Macintosh workstations. Only two customer locations
encountered the problem, and we worked with them to correct the
situation. In version 1.5, this problem was eliminated prior to
shipment and certified by Novell that it no longer existed in
      LANProtect.

We were very disappointed that LAN Magazine never contacted us to
confirm the nature or the magnitude of the problem. They never
tested the product themselves to verify the problem or to understand
and appreciate the tremendous benefit that the LANProtect NLM
provides to the Netware 3.1x environment.

Otzky a odpovdi, Novell bezen 1993

CORE OPERATING SYSTEM

Q: When loading the X.25 driver that ships with WAN LINKS V2.0 on a
server with more than 16MB of RAM, an EXCEPTION 8B or 9B will occur.
The server may even abend. What should I do?

A: Novell is currently working on this problem, which they plan to have
corrected in the next release. For a temporary resolution, add "Set
auto register memory above 16 megabytes=off" to the STARTUP.NCF

Q: Where can I get LIPX.NLM (Large Internet Packet Exchange NLM)?

A: LIPX.NLM is no longer available or supported by Novell.

PBURST.NLM used with NETX.EXE or BNETX.EXE gives LIP (Large Internet
Packet) support. The above files are contained in either DOSUP6.ZIP
(NOVFILES forum) or SECSYS.ZIP (NOVLIB 4) found on NetWire.

Q: I want the color schemes for all menu utilities to be the same for all
     users across the network.  I use COLORPAL to define the defaults;
however, many users still have different color schemes. Can I fix
     this?

A: Yes. The Supervisor must restrict use of COLORPAL and make sure there
is only one common IBM$RUN.OVL. When COLORPAL is executed, a hidden
file called IBM$RUN.OVL is created in the directory where COLORPAL was
initiated. If a menu utility is run from a directory containing
IBM$RUN.OVL, the color setup contained in IBM$RUN.OVL will be used.

Q: Can I mirror/duplex two 300 MB drives with a 600 MB drive?

A: Yes. NetWare mirroring/duplexing is based on the size of the LOGICAL
DATA AREA of netware partitions. If the drives to be
mirrored/duplexed are different sizes, change the HOTFIX REDIRECTION
AREA so the LOGICAL DATA AREAs are identical.

Q: Is there a file that includes all or most of the updated utilities for
     NetWare v3.11?

A: Yes. UPD311.EXE is available on NetWire in the NOVFILES forum.

Q: While running RPRINTER, I constantly lose connection to the server.
     How can I fix this?

A: Use ODI drivers on the workstation. ODI drivers are contained in
DOSUP6.ZIP found on NetWire in the NOVFILES forum.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 7 24 Led 1994

Q: I heard that Windows for Workgroups (WFW) will not work with ODI. Is
     this true?

A: No. WFW uses MSIPX, which is a linked IPX with an NDIS shim included.
The MSIPX can be replaced with ODINSUP and the ODI drivers (contained
in DOSUP6.ZIP found on NetWire in the NOVFILES forum) to interface
with the NetBIOS application. Follow the instructions in the
DOSUP6.ZIP DOC files to install ODINSUP and the ODI drivers.
Technical Bulletin 303 discusses Novell's testing with WFW and
includes a working configuration for WFW and Novell's ODI. This
Technical Bulletin is available on the Network Support Encyclopedia as
TB.P.303 or on NetWire, NOVLIB 11 in TBP300.ZIP.

Q: My NetWare v3.11 file server (EISA machine with 16MB of RAM) is
abending with GPPEs and hanging. What causes this and how can I fix
     it?

A: This happens when the file server memory is not correctly registered
at the 16MB level. To resolve this problem, do the following:

     1. Add "Set Auto Register Memory Above 16 Megabytes=OFF" in the
          STARTUP.NCF file.

This statement will correctly register the memory at the 16MB
          level.

     2. Shut down the file server and bring it back up.

Q: Sometimes my printouts get garbage on them when I print using
PSERVER.NLM on a NetWare v3.11 server. Can this be fixed?

A: Yes. Use PSERV2.ZIP available on NetWire NOVLIB 6 to fix this
     problem.

Q: When my server comes up and the SYS: volume is mounting, the "Problem
with file Q_XXXX.SRV: tts file was not changed" error message was
displayed. What does this mean, and how can I prevent it?

A: This message is informational and will not appear once a new job is
sent to that queue. The XXXX corresponds to the first four characters
of the print queue ID, which can be obtained from the PCONSOLE
utility, PRINT QUEUE INFORMATION menu, QUEUE NAME option, PRINT QUEUE
ID option. This message appears when a server is brought down
abnormally (such as by power failure), because TTS may need to backout
transactions in the queue that were in the process of being executed
     when the server went down.

Q: I just installed DOS 6.0 (or any version greater than 5.0), and now,
when attempting to load NETX.EXE v3.31 or earlier, the following
message is displayed: "Shell requires DOS version 3.0 through version
     5.0." Why is this happening?

A: The current shell versions are designed to search for DOS versions
between 3.0 and 5.0; therefore, the shell does not recognize any other
DOS version as valid. MicroSoft has a utility that changes the DOS
version number in the version number table for a specific utility.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 8 24 Led 1994

This makes the application interpret the version of DOS as valid. To
make this change, do the following:

     1. Place the following statement in the CONFIG.SYS file:

               DEVICE=[drive:][path]SETVER.EXE.

2 Then, issue the following statement at the command line:

               SETVER NETX.EXE 5.00

Q: I get the VREPAIR error "not properly zero filled and not marked as
free or bad" even after running VREPAIR multiple times. What does
this mean, and why is this happening?

A: This error is misleading and should be ignored. When the SYS: volume
is mounted the TTS tracking file, BACKOUT.TTS, is created. When the
SYS: volume is dismounted, this file is deleted but not purged. When
VREPAIR runs with option 4 set to "PURGE ALL DELETED FILES," it
locates the deleted BACKOUT.TTS file and the directory entries this
file occupied. Then VREPAIR cleans up the directory entries and
reports them as errors in VREPAIR.

Q: I have intermittent problems when running MS-DOS 5.0 with RPRINTER and
Windows. My workstation hangs and jobs get stuck in the queue. Can I
     fix this?

A: Yes. Doing the following three steps seems to resolve most of the
     problems:

     1. Apply current ODI Drivers from DOSUP6.ZIP found on NetWire in the
          NOVFILES forum. DOSUP6.ZIP includes:

LSL.COM (v2.00) Adapter driver (most current) IPXODI (v2.00)
               NETX.EXE (v3.31)

     2. Use current RPRINTER.EXE (v1.26) found in PSERV2.ZIP available on
          NetWire NOVLIB 6.

     3. Use current PSERVER.NLM (v1.27) found in PSERV2.ZIP available on
          NetWire NOVLIB 6.

If you are still having problems, consider the following:

     1. TSRs running at the workstation can cause problems.

     2. Various memory managers can cause problems.

     3. Poor cabling can cause problems. It is recommended that the IPX
RETRY COUNT be increased if rprinter is crossing routers or used
on networks with heavy traffic. This adjusts the number of times
packets are resent. Also increase the SPX ABORT TIMEOUT
parameter. This adjusts the amount of time that SPX will wait,
without receiving any response from the other side of the
connection, before it terminates the session.

NETWARE SAA

Q: I need to map the <Reset> key in WSLAN v3.0 to the left Ctrl key so it
matches my other emulators. I have tried to do it using the
instructions in the WSLAN v3.0 manual; however, it does not work.
     What can I do?

A: The instructions located in the WSLAN 3.0 Configuration Guide page
8-25 indicate that you first press the <F10> key to toggle the <Reset>
key to the left <Ctrl> key, then press <End> to save. This results in
having to press the right <Alt> key along with the left <Ctrl> key to
     get the <Reset> function.

The documentation fails to state that the <spacebar> must be pressed
to get to next mode and that the <F10> key needs to be entered for
     each mode.

Q: If the "LOAD BTRIEVE" statement is in my AUTOEXEC.NCF, the "Btrieve
error - unable to create transaction file" error is displayed.

The Btrieve files in the System directory were flagged READ ONLY when
copied from the SAA installation disks. What am I doing wrong?

A: The Btrieve files need to be flagged READ WRITE.

Q: How does the "SET REPLY TO GET NEAREST SERVER (SRTGNS)" parameter work
     with NetWare SAA?

A: SRTGNS does not effect whether WSLAN can recognize the SAA server
     except in one configuration.

Your configuration includes two Token-Rings connected through a
NetWare file server with the SAA server on one ring and WSLAN client
on the other ring. If SRTGNS is set to "off" on both the SAA server
and the file server connecting the two rings, you will not get a
session with WSLAN and will receive the error "CANNOT GET NEAREST
     SERVER LISTING."

If SRTGNS is set to OFF on the SAA server and ON at the file server
connecting the two rings, you will get a session with WSLAN.

Q: What is the recommended program order when using the "extended DOS" PC
Support functions from within a Windows DOS box?

A: If PC Support is running from within Windows and Workstation Function
(WSF) is loaded and stopped from within Windows, the following must be
loaded before Windows 3.x in the order shown below.

     1. PCSXI 2. STRNRTR CONFIG.PCS 3. RTRMAP 4. PCSWIN ( Needed
for running in Windows ) 5. STARTFLR ( Needed If Shared
Folders used ) 6. CFGFLR CONFIG.PCS ( Needed If Shared Folders used )

The following must be run only after exiting from Windows:

     1. RMVPCS ALL /F ( Will get two 5877 error messages ) 2. RTRMAP /T
     ( Removes RTRMAP ) 3. RMVPCS ALL /F ( Removes everything

     else)

The error messages you receive after the first RMVPCS can be ignored.
They are caused because IBMs RMVPCS does not correctly remove RTRMAP.

Be aware also that older versions of RMVPCS have problems unloading
shared folders. Versions of RMVPCS.EXE dated 11-03-92 or later
     resolve this problem.

LAN WORKPLACE

Q: Are there any patches available for LAN WorkPlace v4.1?

A: Yes. There is one patch called "LWP41P1.TXT" available on NetWire
NOVLIB 8. This patch includes the following fixes:

     1. RFC NetBios enhances the use of the NET.CFG remote name cache by
allowing NetBIOS names to include spaces and arbitrary
          hexadecimal characters.

     2. Corrects TCP/IP failure with window size greater than 32KB.

     3. Allows use of the -t parameter with TNVT220.

     4. Corrects terminal type used in VT100 terminal emulation.

     5. Fixes problems with copying and renaming files to AIX v3.2
          systems.

Q: Is there a known problem with LAN WorkPlace for MAC and 32-bit files?

A: Yes. HSTACC.SIT available on NetWire NOVLIB 8 corrects this problem.

Q: Where is the latest version of ODINSUP.COM?

A: DOSUP6.ZIP is available on NetWire in the NOVFILES forum.

MESSAGING

Q: When MHS v1.5 is run on a high speed 486 machine, a Runtime Math error
is received. Is there a fix for this problem?

A: Yes. Download the patch from NetWire NOVLIB 8 according to your
version of MHS v1.5. For example, M15CN4.ZIP would be used for the
CSERVE network version of MHS v1.5.

Q: Are Global MHS (GMHS) and NetWare Global Messaging (NGM) the same
thing? If so, what is the latest version?

A: Yes. Recently, NGM was renamed to GMHS. The latest version of GMHS
is v2.0. A free upgrade is available for those users using NGM v1.0.

NETWARE NFS

Q: I am running NFS v1.2 Rev A, and I just applied SECSYS.ZIP and
upgraded CLIB.NLM to Rev D. Sometimes my server abends with a

"kernel stack overflow" error. What can I do to fix this?

A: Upgrade your software to NFS 1.2 revision B (information on upgrading
can be found in NFS12B.REL on NetWire NOVLIB 2), or do not apply
     SECSYS.ZIP.

Q: After installing FLeX/IP, the server may crash with the following
     message:

Abend: RemoveFile called with invalid file handle Running
          Process: AES Sleep Process

     Can this be fixed?

A: The patch REMFILFX.NLM in 311PTD.ZIP available on NetWire in the
     NOVFILES forum resolves this problem.

Q: How can I suppress the banner page and formfeed when printing to
     NetWare NFS or NetWare FLeX/IP?

A: The following matrix provides a quick summary guide on how to suppress
printer control information from different LP print clients. Check
each UNIX client's manual page for more detailed information.

Q: What is the maximum number of print queues supported by LPR_GWY.NLM
and PLPD.NLM in NetWare NFS and NetWare FLeX/IP?

A: Printing from NetWare-to-UNIX, LPR_PSVR supports a maximum of 16
outgoing print queues. To support more, additional copies of NFS or
FLeX/IP software need to be purchased and installed on another server.

When printing from UNIX-to-NetWare, there is no limit for the number
of receiving queues serviced by PLPD.

Q: When starting NetWare NFS, the following error message occurs:

Loader cannot find public symbol: IPGetIFInfo

There is an NLM dependency between BCASTLIB.NLM and the NetWare TCP/IP
version being used on the server. How do I fix this?

A: Add "Load BCASTLIB.NLM" to the AUTOEXEC.NCF before the NFSSTART.NCF
and PKERNAL.NLM statements. BCASTLIB.NLM comes with the NetWare NFS
     product.

Q: When trying to use PLPD.NLM, it is unloaded and a "Stack Overflow"
message is shown on the screen. The server did not crash; however,
printing from UNIX-to-NetWare no longer functioned, and the print job
     was not delivered.

A: Make sure Intel's LAN Protect NLM is not loaded on the same server.
An earlier version of LAN Protect NLM (v1.0) will unload PLPD because
it does not recognize it as a valid service. Contact Intel to get a
later version of LAN Protect NLM (v1.5 or above).

LANALYZER

Q: "IBMNBSUI" and "IBMNBSI" templates do not exist. When viewing a
decoded packet from a trace file, no template is applied even though
     one is specified.

The templates "IBMNBSUI"and "IBMNBSI" are referenced in the
     application /XLN/LANZ/802.5/NETBEUI/MISC (16MB tok-r) for the receive
channels under F4-options/F8-trace options. However, they do not
     exist.

A: Novell engineering left those template names in the application by
mistake. The workaround is either solution 1 or 2:

     1. In the "Trace Options" screen, select "Apply Template(s) To Data"
          and then select "No".

     2. Use the "netbif" template and modify it if necessary.

Q: When capturing packets using a LANalyzer application, the resulting
trace file contains only "ncp: Rply UnKnown (Request not seen)"
     packets.

A: When capturing NCP packets, do not isolate the requests from the
     replies.

The LANalyzer decodes NCP packets based on the NCP type and function
codes. A NCP type 2222h is a general request and NCP type 3333h is a
     request processed.  There are only function codes for Request Type;
for example request type 2222 function code 72 corresponds to a Read
From File. The LANalyzer makes a determination based on this. When
the request packet is followed by a reply, it assumes that it is a
reply to the "Read From File" function code and does not complain.
However, if the LANalyzer never sees the request function code, it
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 13 24 Led 1994

will not know what kind of reply it is. Thus, the error message.
This can be reproduced by setting a filter to capture just NCP 3333h
     packets.

LANALYZER for WINDOWS

Q: Can the LANalyzer for Windows (LZFW) be inserted into a beaconing
     Token-Ring?

A: No. LZFW is seen as a regular workstation because it uses a LAN
board. If the ring is beaconing, LZFW will fail to insert until
beaconing stops. If LZFW was running when the beaconing started,
     information would be generated.

NETWARE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Q: If COMMEXEC.NLM is in the SYS:SYSTEM directory while installing NMS, a
warning message is displayed stating that NWSAA is already installed.

A: NetWare SAA v1.3 corrects this problem. If the NACS software or
NetWare SAA is not running on the server, rename COMMEXEC.NLM to
another name such as COMMEXEC.OLD, and restart the NMS installation.

Q: TRAPTARG.CFG defines recipients of SNMP traps. How are SNMP trap
messages sent to third-party management consoles?

A: TRAPTARG.CFG is located in the SYS:SYSTEM\ETC directory after
installing SNMP. This file can be used to define recipients for
receiving SNMP traps over IPX and UDP. (The file is fully documented
to show how to divide the file into IPX and UDP sections and how to
write the IPX and IP address of recipients).

PRODUCT INFORMATION

NetWare 4.0

Q: What is the maximum printer buffer size?

A: 255KB. The buffer can be configured to be 1KB to 255KB.

Q: Does NetWare 4.0 come with backup Teas for workstations? If so, which
     types?

A: Yes. NetWare 4.0 will include Teas for DOS, Windows and OS/2 only.

Q: When enabling Data migration in NetWare 4.0, is this done by volume or
     by directory?

A: This is done by volume. For example, it could be set so if the volume
is 80 percent full, begin migrating the least recently used data until
the volume is 70 percent full.

Q: Will any of the "Add-on" NLMs ship with NetWare 4.0?

A: Yes. The 5-user version of NetWare for Macintosh 4.0 will ship with

Q: Will I be able to mirror compressed drives with NetWare 4.0?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I migrate data to a workstations hard drive with the High Capacity
     Storage System (HCSS)?

A: No.

Q: How does High Capacity Storage System (HCSS) backing off affect
     performance?

A: Performance is only affected when accessing files on some unmounted
media (such as a tape drive); however, after the data is cached, there
is no performance degradation. If the file has been backed off to a
mounted and faster media than tape (such as a CD-ROM), there should be
very little, if any, performance degradation. The migration process
itself should not affect performance at all.

Q: Can you upgrade from NetWare v2.2 to NetWare 4.0 without first
     upgrading to NetWare v3.11?

A: Yes. There is an upgrade from NetWare v2.2 to NetWare 4.0; although,
it does require a two-step upgrade. The migration utilities that ship
with NetWare 4.0 allow you to upgrade from NetWare v2.2 because it
converts the bindery to a NetWare v3.11 format before upgrading to
     NetWare 4.0.

Q: Will the current Macintosh NLMs (3.01, 3.011) work with NetWare 4.0?

A: No. You need the NetWare for MAC 4.0 NLM to support Macintosh
machines in a NetWare 4.0 server environment.

Q: Can you merge Directory Service Trees?

A: No.

Q: Once File compress is turned on, can it later be turned off?

A: No.

TCP/IP

Q: Does LAN WorkPlace for DOS provide a WINSOCK API DLL?

A: No. However, this will be supported in the future.

Q: Does the NetWare NFS Gateway include anything that NetWare NFS
     includes?

A: No. It does not support printing or allow UNIX boxes to mount NetWare
volumes. However, it does coexist with NetWare NFS, LAN WorkGroup, or
     LAN WorkPlace.

Q: With NetWare FLeX/IP, can you have multiple FTP sessions accessing the
Novell host at the same time? Can you transfer multiple files at

     once?

A: Yes. The maximum concurrent FTP connections to the Novell host is 75.
This can be set with the "Session X" statement in the FTPSERV.CFG
file, located in the SYS:SYSTEM/ETC directory. Yes, use the NGET
command to transfer multiple concurrent files from the Novell host.

Management

Q: Can NSM be used to manage a NetWare for UNIX server?

A: Not currently. The NSM manages NetWare v3.11 servers with a NetWare
Management Agent NLM loaded. For NSM to manage a NetWare for Unix
server, the Agent NLM would need to be ported to the platform that is
running NetWare for Unix and run in the background as a Daemon.
Currently, no NetWare for UNIX partners have ported these NLMs to
     Daemons.

Q: Will LANalyzer for Windows run in a Windows box under OS/2 v2.0?

A: No.

NETWARE LITE

Q: My NetWare Lite server hangs when SERVER.EXE is loaded. What could be
     wrong?

A: There could be base memory conflicts. Some network boards use a base
memory address to send and receive data across the network. This base
memory address is in upper memory (such as C800:0000) and is usually
     16KB in size.

If a memory manager is used that gives you upper memory blocks, your
network board may not initialize or your machine may lock when logging
on to the network. This may be caused because the memory manager and
board are using the same upper memory space.

To solve this conflict, exclude the network boards shared memory space
from being used by the memory manager. For example, if your network
board uses 16KB of memory space starting at address C800:0000, follow
the steps below to exclude this area.

     1. With the DR DOS EMM386.SYS memory manager, configure the memory
          manager as follows:

               DEVICE=C:\DRDOS\EMM386.SYS /E=C800-CBFF

     2. With the MS-DOS EMM386.EXE memory manager, configure as follows:

               DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=C800-CBFF.

This will keep your memory manager from allocating the 16KB upper
memory space for other uses. If this does not solve the problem, try
increasing the range of the exclusion. Please refer to your memory
     manager documentation for specific syntax.

Q: Two people share a network application across a NetWare Lite network.
When the second person attempts to load the application they get a
sharing violation. How do I get the application to allow multiple
     users?

A: There are several things that may need to be done for this to work
     correctly. Follow the steps below:

     1. If the application being installed has network specific
installation, then "Other networks..", "DOS peer to peer
network", or something similar should be selected. Do not select
NetWare or Novell unless it states NetWare Lite.

     2. DOS SHARE must be loaded on all servers.

     3. The number of open files in your CONFIG.SYS (FILES = 150) may
          need to be increased.

     4. You may need to set all shared executable files as READ ONLY with
the DOS ATTRIB command. This commonly includes application files
with .EXE, .COM, and .OVL extensions. (Example: The attrib +r
*.exe command will make all files with .EXE extension in the
          current directory READ ONLY).

Q: I lose my NetWare Lite network connection when a print job is sent to
my network printer. Then I have to reboot to reestablish a
connection. How can I fix this?

A: Check the I/O port address set on the server's network board. If the
I/O is set to 360 or 370, it may be conflicting with the I/O port
address for LPT1. This can cause the network card to lose the network
connection when LPT1 is accessed. Try a different I/O port address
     such as 300 or 340.

Q: After I upgraded from NetWare Lite v1.0 to v1.1, the server locks when
     I type my username.

A: NetWare Lite comes with its own disk caching program called NLCache.
If you are already running a disk cache, such as Windows SMARTDRV, the
two caches running together may cause locking problems. If you are
using NLcache, you must remove SMARTDRV from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
SMARTDRV may be used in place of NLCache; however, SMRTDRV's deferred
writes must be disabled. To disable deferred writes add the drive
letter of the drive to be cached after the SMARTDRV.EXE statement
     (Example: C:\windows\smartdrv.exe c).

Q: What are the current patches for NetWare Lite v1.1, and where can I
     get them?

A: The most current patches are L11U02.ZIP and L11P02.ZIP. L11U02.ZIP
fixes a number of printing related problems, and Novell recommends it
be applied to all machines running NetWare Lite v1.1. The other patch
file contain patches specific to certain applications. See the README
files for those two patches to determine if you need to apply them.
You can get the patches from CompuServe, NOVLIB 10, or by calling
     Novell's Monterey BBS at 408-649-3443 (2400 baud) or 408-649-3696

                        Hack Report, September 1993

  =========================================================================

                              The Trojan Wars

Well, folks, it has happened again. Someone apparently doesn't like the
idea of The Hack Report, and has decided to take a hack at it themselves.
Fortunately, it was caught rather quickly, thanks to the people who read
and support the report. Your assistance is very much appreciated, folks!
This isn't the only new report for the month - oh yes, there is more.
So, sit back, buckle up, enjoy the scenery, and read on.

| As I just mentioned, there has been another attack against The Hack
| Report itself: this time, against the August issue. James Anderson (1:
| 379/609) left a message on Jack Cross's system (1:3805/13, Official Hack
| Report Utility Distribution Site) and a copy of the August report archive
| which contained the file HMON.EXE. This Trojan, found by one of James's
| users on a Florida BBS, attacks mostly .exe files on your path, as well
| as some Windows programs and COMMAND.COM (according to James' report).

| The archive of the report had one of its text files altered as well. The
| NOTE9308.TXT file had a paragraph inserted at the beginning which claimed
| that the HMON.EXE file was a "small virus-detection program" that "i and
| others (sic) were developing." Those of you who have followed this
| report since its start would suspect this immediately, as I have
| previously stated that I am not an anti-viral programmer or researcher:
| merely a journalist who relays reports he receives from others.

| The paragraph goes on to say (in very bad grammar) that the file should
| be placed in the same directory as SCAN.EXE, and recommends that you put
| it on your path. I do not know why, but I would assume that it looks for
| McAfee's SCAN and does something nasty to it.

| In any event, allow me to restate the warning that I made when this
| happened previously:

| THE OFFICIAL ARCHIVE OF THE HACK REPORT WILL _NEVER_ CONTAIN
| ANY EXECUTABLE OR BATCH FILE! ONLY TEXT FILES AND NON-
| EXECUTABLE BINARY FILES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT ARCHIVE.

| If you have _any_ doubt of the legitimacy of your copy of the report,
| please inform your friendly neighborhood HackWatcher or myself, and
| contact one of the official distribution sites to obtain an official
| copy.

| With the above in mind, and taking into regard the best interests of the
| BBS community, HACK9308 goes into the report as a file to avoid.

| From the "I'll Sell You the Brooklyn Bridge for $5" department: a file
| claiming to be an archiver that can achieve 1500:1 compression of almost
| any file has been spotted. Sounds too good to be true? You're right: it
| is too good to be true.

| The file in question is called OWS95B. The first report I received on it
| came via HW Bob Seaborn, although at least a dozen reports similar to his
| came through the echos I monitor or through NetMail. In short, the file
| does nothing more than act like an "undelete" utility of sorts, storing
| filenames and copying them to other directories. Test results of this
| file can be seen in the file FILETSTS.LZH, part of the archive version of
| The Hack Report. Look for two files inside this internal archive: a
| text report from Kevin Gates (1:140/64) called OWS.RES, and a dump of the
| data segment of the program, DS_DUMP.OWS.

| If you have a copy of this program and need to see for yourself that it
| is a fraud, here is a test devised by Bob that should do the trick.

| *** The Seaborn Test

| 1) Create a temporary working directory (\WORK) and a temporary test
| directory (\TEST) on any drive.
| 2) Copy any number of mixed files into the \WORK directory.
| 3) Use OWS.EXE to create \TEST\archive.ows of \WORK\*.*
| 4) Now use SUNOWS.COM to tear apart \TEST\archive.ows, with the files
| going into the \TEST directory.

| At this point everything should appear to work properly.

| 5) Delete all the original files in the \WORK\*.* directory.
| 6) Use SUNOWS.COM to extract all the files in the \TEST\archive.ows
| file to restore all the files originally in the \WORK directory.

| This will fail giving you a "Sector Not Found, Abort, Retry, Fail"
| error, and there's nothing that you can do to solve this error.

| This file was originally reported in the Hoax Alert section of this
| report. However, Aryeh Goretsky, SysOp of the McAfee VirusForum on
| CompuServe (76702,1714) pointed out that this is actually a Trojan. Here
| are his comments, used by permission:

| "The program is indeed a Trojan horse. It is an expectation of the
| author that the user will delete the original uncompressed file. An
| expectation that is filled most of the time...."

| I had not considered this when I classed the file as a simple Hoax.
| However, Aryeh is right. This is a very sneaky Trojan. It doesn't do
| any damage to your system: instead, it fools you into doing the damage
| yourself.

| Ian Douglas (5:7105/119) forwarded a sighting of RAG2FIX from Tiaan Van
| Aardt (5:7105/8). This file, a supposed "fix" for RemoteAccess
| v2.00gamma, gives itself away by using the company name "Continental
| Software" - a name no longer in use by the RA folks. The Trojan first
| searches for your FILES.RA file, and then erases all files in the current
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 22 24 Led 1994

| directory, your RA.KEY file, and any ARJ, LZH, and ZIP files it runs
| across. Hopefully, this hasn't spread outside of FidoNet Zone 5
| (Africa), but you never know: keep your eyes open.

| Carl Johnson (1:115/363) reported on VIZ534, a possible isolated incident
| involving a program called VIZ. From Carl's analysis, he was unable to
| determine if this was a pure Trojan, an altered legitimate program, or a
| Trojan masquerading as a legitimate program. However, Michael Toth, a
| regular contributor to The Hack Report, received a copy of the file and
| verified its destructive behaviour. Here are the archive contents:

| Files in archive: VIZ.DAT, 22426 bytes
| VIZ.COM, 3163 bytes
| VIZ.DOC, 65715 bytes
| VIZ.REG, 3676 bytes

| What it's supposed to do: Accelerate video performance, as
| well as do a few utilities with
| the video display.

| Carl learned that when the VIZ.COM file is run, it renames VIZ.DAT to
| BE.EXE (a file from The Norton Utilities v6.X, known as Batch Enhancer).
| Next, it displays a configuration screen, then displays the string:

| "Is this text in red? (Y/N)

| At some point during all of this, it executes the system command
| FORMAT C: /Q /U, apparently suppressing the output and replacing it with
| the above string. This tricks the user into answering "yes" to the
| normal warning about all data on the non-removable drive being lost.
| John says that he was lucky in that he uses MS-DOS 6.0 and DoubleSpace,
| which prevented the normal FORMAT command from operating (a side benefit
| of DoubleSpace? Trojan protection? Interesting.).

| HW Bill Lambdin received a file for testing from Brian O'Sullivan. The
| file, SPORT21C, claims to be a serial port analyzer. It seems that Brian
| has located an infected copy of the program, possibly an isolated
| incident. The INSTALL.COM file in the archive is infected with a new
| variant of the Butterfly virus, which differs from the original in that
| it contains the text "Hurray the Crusades!", and that it infects .exe
| files as well as .com files. Bill provides the following information for
| users of Frisk's F-Prot and other scanners that allow for external scan
| strings:

| "F-Prot 2.09 detects this virus as Butterfly in .COM files, but
| misses it in .EXE files. Add this signature to F-Prot or others
| scanners that allow the use of external signature file.

| Name: Butterfly (Crusades)
| Infects: .COM and .EXE files.
| Signature: B4 4E 8D B6 50 02 8D 96 2C 02 52 EB 3C B4 1A BA

| Remove the spaces between the HEX values when adding the signature."

| Martin Roesler (Martin_Roesler@nem.fido.de, 2:246/149) posted a message
| in the FidoNet VIRUS_INFO echo that was rather short and to the point.
| He stated that a file called BREAKARJ is circulating in Germany, and that
| it contains the Split virus. He ended by saying that Split is a simple
| COM infector, 250 bytes long, and can be detected with the following
| signature:

| 9CFC 8DB6 DF01 BF00 01B9 0200

| Short, to the point, and much appreciated.

Glenn Jordan (1:3641/1.201) reports on a "wave of Trojans down in
Oklahoma" (or up in Oklahoma, depending on your geographical
perspective). His contact originally came via Doug Taylor of the
Vanishing Point BBS. According to Glenn, someone got a bunch of [IVP]
produced viruses and a Trojan produced by a Trojan Construction Kit, then
proceeded to upload them to quite a few systems. The only filename
provided, however, was ZIPCHAP, which contained an ANSI bomb that
redefined your spacebar to invoke an internal ZIPCHAP program (apparently
infected - Glenn's copy was corrupted and wouldn't run).

This ANSI bomb is a bit different from others that I have seen, but not
unique in its method. It is stored inside the archive under the filename
CON. In other words, it's actually a device bomb variant - turning off
ANSI comments in PKZIP or other unpackers won't stop it, since it isn't
part of the header. Instead, unpacking the file causes the device CON to
be opened, and the bomb is written straight to it as a result.

HW Chris Wise received reports on two Trojans from Jim Deal (address not
given). The first, PRIN2UNP, claimed to be an "unprotect" for Prince of
Persia 2, but appears to be a compiled batch file that does a good deal
of damage. It starts by deleting everything in your C: drive root
directory, as well as the directory C:\DOS. It then checks to see if you
are running a BBS: if so, it deletes the files in your BBS directory.
Finally, it looks for other drives in your system and deletes their root
  directories as well.

The second Trojan, VECTORS, was described as a Sound Blaster demo
program. It was compressed with PKLite v1.15. This one simply deletes
all files in your C: drive's root directory, but that is enough to make
your system unbootable for a while. This wasn't a compiled batch file:
however, Jim's report stated it contained some Borland BGI drivers, which
indicates it had some graphics in it (apparently to show off).

Jim says that both files came from the same place. I assume he meant
they were both done by the same person, as both had a message inside that
said, "Thanks for trusting F.*.C.K.S. INFORMER."

Rod Fewster (3:640/886) did a bit of detective work on a file claiming
to be version 8.2 of Vern Buerg's LIST program, under the filename
LIST82. He says he called Mr. Buerg to confirm the file, and verified
that this is not a valid release. In fact, the file Rod received from
one of his users is infected.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 24 24 Led 1994

His examination of the file shows it to be compressed with PKLite, using
the "no unpack" option. Further, the documentation has been altered to
look authentic, and the archive was packed with a PKZip -AV stamp which
displays the text "Authentic files from Vernon D. Buerg" when unzipped.
The only giveaways Rod could find were that the internal help screen date
didn't match the filedates, and the copyright notice reads "1983-92".

Rod says the file is infected with a variant of the Butterfly virus which
he calls the FJM virus ("for want of a better name"). This virus infects
.com files in the directory it is executed in by attaching itself to the
end of a few files at a time, increasing each file's size by 305 bytes.
The infected files then spread the infection. The virus does not attack
COMMAND.COM, nor does it attack files "smaller than about 100 bytes."

The virus does not show immediately inside of the LIST program, but the
files it infects are detectable by VirusBuster v4.00.23, F-Prot, and
TBAV in heuristic mode. VirusBuster can disinfect the infected files.

Rod provided the following scan string that users of VirusBuster v4.xx
can add to their VBTSR.DAT file:

        Butterfly/FJM
        ED ?12 96 ?10 96 ?0F DB ?08 BC ?02 BD ?04 ED ?02 DB

He says this will stop Butterfly and FJM dead in their tracks. Thanks
  for the report, Rod!

An extremely widely reported incident concerned Winfred Hu's Telemate
program, v4.11. Winfred himself has confirmed that an internal
self-extracting archive, VESA.EXE, which is part of the archive TM411-4,
contains two files that are infected with the Butterfly virus. These
files, in the archive subdirectory OAK, are 37VESA.COM and 67VESA.COM.
The infection can be detected by F-Prot v2.08a.

Winfred has since distributed a replacement archive, TM411-4A, which does
not contain these files. (This has now been superseded by a new
version, TM412-1 through TM412-4.) He has asked that anyone who has the
infected archive delete it and replace it with the newest version. He
also stresses that neither Telemate or GIFLink (part of the Telemate
package) are infected - only the two VESA drivers.

Winfred has since informed me via HW Richard Steiner that the same VESA
drivers are present in the files GIFLK110 and GIFLK111. He has asked
that these two archives be deleted and replaced with GIFLK112 (or the
most current version). GIFLK112 has a README.TXT file which mentions the
infected VESA drivers inside the v1.10 and v1.11 files.

He also states that he has traced the infection back to an isolated
incident of an infected copy of LIST77B. He was unable to say for
certain where this copy originally came from.

Editorial - as I've said before, it takes a lot of courage for an author
to publicly announce such a problem with their software. Winfred Hu is
to be commended for his handling of this situation, and for the prompt
action he has taken to resolve it.

Gary Marden (2:258/27) has located a Trojan version of a file that was
quite popular last year - USRPATCH. This was originally distributed as a
"patch" to the ROMs of a certain modem that would take advantage of a bug
left in the ROM chips in order to upgrade the modem to faster speeds.

However, this Trojan takes advantage of your system instead of your
modem. At first look, it appears to be a mutation of the BILLNTED Trojan
reported last year by David Elkins (2:254/78). Gary says that it acts
more like the QOUTES Trojan reported later in this section. It displays
the following messages once you invoke the internal USRPATCH.EXE file:

Please wait, extracting user files.Bill'N'Ted have begun their
         bogus journey...
Bill'N'Ted have begun their bogus journey.
Looks like an Evil Robot Bill'N'Ted have trashed your drive, dude!

At this point, your prompt turns into a simple "C>". If you press Enter,
your screen displays the message, "So long, suckers!", and then clears,
leaving you with a system that is quite useless.

Gary's test, performed on an MFM drive, resulted in a hard drive with the
first 128 cylinders low-level formatted. This included the partition
table, boot sectors, and FATs. Repair is not possible using FDISK alone,
since the first 128 cylinders remain inaccessible. The only practical
repair is to perform your own low-level format, followed by FDISK and a
  high-level format.

Gary did not test this with an IDE drive, but I am willing to wager that
he would have had the same results. Repair would not have been as
simple, however - unless you have some heavy-duty IDE utility software,
you'd have to send your drive back to the manufacturer for a low-level
  format. Most bogus indeed.

HW Emanuel Levy forwarded a report from John Rose (1:106/6001) about
FORUM30. The file, according to John, was "cleverly disguised as a 'new
BBS package'...." However, John says it formatted both of his hard
  drives.

                               OS/2 WISHLIST

This is the OS/2 Wishlist, compiled from people on the Internet and
Fidonet. This document hopefully represents the direction in which the
public would like OS/2 to go and the tasks that must be accomplished to get
OS/2 there.

Whenever possible, the wish descriptions are taken from direct quotes from
the author. If the wish is taken as a direct quote, it is included in
double quotes ( "" ). Any comments made with respect to these quotes are
listed in parentheses ( () ). Editing changes are marked in square
brackets ( [] ). Wishes not listed in quotes are ones I wrote myself.

Attached to each item is the name and address (or multiple names and
addresses if the item was requested by multiple people). The first address
is the first person asking for the addition (and if the wish description is
a direct quote, the author of the quote); any additional addresses are
people asking for the same or similar addition to OS/2.

The items listed are in the order in which they were received.

Please mail any additions to evanc@spatial.synapse.org (Internet) or Evan
Champion @ 1:163/590 (Fidonet).

POSIX COMPLIANCE

(could someone elaborate this one for me as I am not very familiar with
POSIX nor the reasons for wanting POSIX compliance)

  Babak Masalehdan (tillman+@pitt.edu)

DRIVER SUPPORT
3rd party driver support must be improved; IBM should do everything
possible to get 3rd party vendors to support OS/2 and must do everything
ensure the same high-quality drivers we get from IBM for 3rd party
vendors. Possibly, a driver testing centre should be set up to give free
testing of device drivers for compatibility with OS/2 systems. In
addition, a volunteer device driver testing group (perhaps based on Team
OS/2) could be created to do free testing of device drivers. IBM could
manage a database with each member's configuration and would be made
available on request for the manufacturers of the drivers. This solution
would satisfy everyone by providing a low-cost yet very diverse test bed
  for device drivers.

SYMETRIC MULTIPROCESSING
Optional symetric multiprocessing (SMP) should be part of the base system,

GLOBAL CHANGE OPTION FOR THE WPS
There should be a way to say, for example, 'Make all folders look like
  this one'.

  John Heiden (jheiden@uoft02.utoledo.edu)

INI EDITOR
An INI editor should be included as part of the base system.

  John Heiden (jheiden@uoft02.utoledo.edu)
  Joshua Samuel (josh@werple.aphana.org.au)
  Jani Patanen (japa@mits.mdata.fi)

TEXT-MODE EDITOR
A text editor that can be used when booting from floppies must be included
for emergency measures. I recommend using the same editor that comes with
IBM DOS 6.1 which is based on TinyEd, an IBM EWS product.

COMMON INSTALL PROGRAM
A single, common install and uninstall program should come with OS/2 and
IBM should insist that all 3rd party vendors make use of it. This install
program should even be used for the OS/2 installation. I recommend the
one that comes with IBM SearchManager/2. Whichever install program is
chosen, it MUST have the ability to selectively install software - down
to individual productivity applications, and the user should have the
option of where to install each individual package (possibly down to the
application level if the configuration would allow it). This install
program must also support CID and allow LAN adminsitrators to create their
  own CID scripts.

NEW FILE SYSTEM
  This new file system should have: UNIX-style hard and symbolic links;
security in the form of read, write and execute bits for the user, group
and other; an execute bit for specifying executable files without relying
on the filename ending in 'EXE', 'COM', etc.; must be journaled; support
extended attributes greater than 64K, caches greater than 2 MB, immense
file system size (in the terabyte range). This file system should be
positionned as a replacement for HPFS; in fact, a program to convert from
HPFS to the new filesystem as well as from FAT to the new file system
  should be provided.

INSTALLABLE FILE SYSTEMS FOR REMOVABLE DEVICES
Installable file systems must be made available for removable devices,
including floppies. It is unaccepable for a user with optical disks to be
forced to use FAT instead of another file system (ie: HFPS)

MOVEMENT OF SHADOWS IN TO THE FILE SYSTEM
The Shadows are one of the most complex parts of the WPS because often
users don't understand that a shadow only exists in the desktop.
Therefore, shadows (or 'symbolic links') should become part of the file
system. This could be accomplished with a new file system (see above) or
additions to an existing file system.

MOVEMENT OF INFORMATION FROM THE OS2.INI TO THE FILE SYSTEM
Icon information etc. should be moved from the INI files in to the file
system in the form of extended attributes. This will allow users to
retain system settings even when replacing the operating system as all the
necessary settings are kept along in the application's extended attributes
which can be backed up, and would solve the problem of the ever-growing
  OS2.INI file.

MULTIPLE INPUT QUEUES
"I can't stand having PM lockup or be pokey on me because it only has
a single input queue and some brain dead or slow PM program has
stopped servicing it. Windows NT has this and the alpha of Chicago
I played with does too. And don't placate me by telling me a "good"
PM program should use multiple threads and this wouldn't be a problem.
Bull! IBM's own apps with the Developer News CD are one of the worst

starting up even on my 486SLC2/66 Mhz box)."

A SIMPLE, ROCK SOLID INSTALL PROCESS
OS/2 has in the past had a reputation for a terrible install process.
Whether many of the problems have been solved or not, the fact remains
that many people still have problems, and even more people fear installing
OS/2 in the first place because they have heard about the 'OS/2 Install
  Monster'.

In addition to just installing the operating system, the install program
should do some initial hardware testing and provide useful feedback to
the user about what to do to correct any problems. Things to be checked
  include:
    - cache memory (works or not)
    - change line in diskette drives
    - proper operating of parallel port
and anything else that could cause problems for OS/2 down the line.

RELIABLE WORKPLACE SHELL BACKUP/RESTORE (OS2.INI AND DESKTOP DIRECTORY)
"Why should people have to resort on shareware utils which may/may not

Use the display driver utility that came with your video card, as you
would have normally done in Windows 3.1. If you have a 24-bit card such
as the Diamond Speedstar 24X, you will be able to use its 16.7 million
color capabilities in Win-OS/2. You can even change the resolution of
Win-OS/2 without changing the resolution in OS/2. These windows drivers
are written for the specific card and deliver performance.

What is the best way to partition my hard disk for OS/2?

There is no single best way to partition your hard disk for OS/2. For some
advice on the subject you should consult the IBM OS/2 Installation and
Planning Guide, available for download from (3.2) Shareware and Freeware
Sources, and the OS/2 Installation Guide in the OS/2 package.

It can be useful to place OS/2 by itself in a separate partition of about
40 or 50 MB. If you then elect to experiment with beta releases of OS/2,
you can reformat that particular partition quite easily to erase all old
code. The swap file can be placed on another partition; its location is
determined by the SWAPPATH line in CONFIG.SYS.

Partitioning should be performed by booting the OS/2 Installation Disk.
Executing FDISK from the command line will not allow certain functions to
be performed.

Summary:

Setup, MemMaker, and DoubleSpace need to locate the Windows directory
on your hard disk (if you have one). To find the Windows directory,
Setup looks for the following four files:

   WIN.COM
   PROGMAN.INI
   SYSTEM.INI

When you run SETUP /E to install the optional utilities, Setup checks
to make sure your DOS directory is in the path and looks for
DISKCOPY.COM in that directory.

MemMaker and DoubleSpace look for the following three files:

   WINVER.EXE
   SYSTEM.INI
   WINFILE.INI

Summary:

The following enhancements have been made to SMARTDrive version 4.1:

 - Corrections to minor problems for better handling bad sectors
 - SMARTDrive now supports DoubleSpace

More Information:

Corrections to Minor Problems for Better Handling Bad Sectors
-------------------------------------------------------------

SMARTDrive version 4.1 includes the following corrections:

 - SMARTDrive now correctly deals with bad sectors.
 - SMARTDrive now correctly handles the int 21 function 68h (Commit
   File) carry flag.

SMARTDrive Now Supports DoubleSpace
-----------------------------------

If a DoubleSpace volume is mounted before SMARTDrive version 4.1 is
loaded, it caches the DoubleSpace host drives. This functionality is
similar to the way SMARTDrive version 4.0 (and 4.1) works with
Stacker. The caching of DoubleSpace through the host drive is
accomplished using a special interface to the DoubleSpace components.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-03 Str. 43 24 Led 1994

If you specify a DoubleSpace drive on the SMARTDrive command line, you
get the following error message:

You must specify the host drive for a DoubleSpace drive.

To use SMARTDrive with DoubleSpace, you must specify the host drive.

SMARTDrive lists DoubleSpace drives with an asterisks (*), indicating
that caching is really done via the host drive.
