     ----------------------------------------------------------------------

What is this The idea for Oz96 was formed around mid-year 1995 on Bloodnet,
"demo-party" one of Australia's demoscene networks. It seemed that the
thing anyway? Australian demoscene has flourished enough to a point where a
party could be held with great attendance - this seems to
mirror the circumstances around NAID, North America's demoparty
(except that Oz96 will hopefully have better organisation :-).
Oz96 is not *truly* the first Australian demo party. There
have been some other small gatherings, such as Coven'95, but
Oz96 will be the first party involving the majority of the
		Australian Scene.

Oz96 is a party for the demoscene, a gathering of all those
demofreaks out there as well as other demo-related occults such
as the underground music and art scenes. As such, in the
spirit of the scene, it is a friendly and most importantly
		non-profit venture.

		---------------------------------------------------------------

When is this The party will start at about 5:00pm on Wednesday the 17th of
going to January 1996, and finishes around midday on Friday the 19th of
happen? January. Of course, if you want to leave earlier, FINE! ;)
We were originally planning a weekend, but well, you can't
		have everything!

		---------------------------------------------------------------

Where do I Oz'96 will be held at "The Evil BrotherHood of Mutants
turn up? warehouse"! Which is located at Level 1 144 Cleveland Street
		Chippendale, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

The Venue is very close to public transport, only 10 minutes
walk from Central Railway station, in the center of Sydney, and
it is only 5 minutes walk from Sydney University!

The venue is on the northern side of Cleveland street, and it
is right near the intersection of Abercrombie St and Cleveland
St. It is not the most noticeable building, but we will try to
put up as many direction signs as needed too make it obvious.

Getting there by plane is also simple, from Sydney airport you
just get yourself to the train station, and make your way to
Central station, and from there follow the rest of the
		instructions.

If you are driving then it won't be easy! The site is right
near the Sydney CBD, and so the amount of parking is very
limited. :( Most parking is expensive around the area, or it
		is time limited.

We suggest you try to come by train, if you live in Sydney
then you should know the dificulties of parking in that area.
If you can find a place, then more power to ya! :)

If you are coming from far away by car, then contact us and we
will try to arrange you a parking space. :)

More info on trips to the party can be found at the end of this
		info file.

Getting there should be very easy. If you have any doubts then
contact the organisers, or check out the "Oz96 World Wide Web
Page" for more detailed and up to date info on travel! (More
		info on that later)

		---------------------------------------------------------------

What's there? - The venue will hold approximately 150 people, and we will
try to provide every demogroup with their own table, chairs
and electrical outlets. (However, it's still highly, highly
recommended that you bring your own powerpoint extensions). We
will not provide computers to anybody, so nyer, bring your own.
But if you do wish to bring a computer, inform us first!

		- A network server will be available. So brush up on those
		C&C skills. :)

		- A sleeping area will be available. It will be stocked with
waterbeds, pillows, a personal desk and has a public swimming
pool. Yer, and Firelight's your mom as well. :)
No seriously, you need to bring your own pillows and sleeping
bags as they will not be provided. Also if you do intend to
stay the night then inform us first. There is a limited amount
		of sleeping space!

                - An SVGA (up to 640x480x256) overhead projector will be used
for showing demos, movies, oscilloscopes, and for the weird
		people, sexy Japanese animes.

		- The sound system will be very powerful, and if you sit in
front of the speaker all the time, well good luck to ya.. :)

		- The venue is well in the middle of the City, so there are
like 13 MacDonalds in walking distance, and everything else
you can possibly think of. :)

                - Showers will be available - contact us for more info on that.
(Yeah at the same time when you contact us about your staying
		the night. :])

		- We will have a 24hour SLIP/PPP connection at the party, but
that's not saying any of you will be allowed to use it! :)

		- If you dont make it to the party then check out the channel
#oz96 on irc and you should find some drunken fool on there at
		most times. :)

		- All rules regarding the party will be shown on the network
server 24 hours per day, until Ozone crashes it as usual.

		---------------------------------------------------------------

What are the Competition entries may be either entered at the party by at
competitions? least one of the authors, or remotely sent to the organisers.
The closing date for remote entries is midnight on 13th January
1996. (The weekend beforehand) They also must be sent to
either Random or Black Artist, depending on who is closest!
Also the entries cannot be released before the party, they will
		be released after.

		The competition machine will be:

			i486dx4/100
			4MB Ram
Tseng Labs ET4000w32p Vesa Local Bus SVGA Card
			1Mb Gravis Ultrasound Max Card
			Sound Blaster Pro

Running MS-DOS v6.2 with the authors' choice of

			a) HIMEM.SYS installed and
			     600k free base memory and
			   3,000k free XMS memory, or

			b) HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE installed and
			     600k free base memory
			   3,000k free EMS/XMS memory.

All entries must be able to run on this machine. If they don't
the organisers *may* help you out. :) (Depends how nice you
are!) (Note: numbers listed are estimates)

All entries must be accompanied by ENTRY.FRM filled out
appropriately. This is only for the organiser's information
                and won't be released.

We suggest you give us all the info files and such that go
with your entry, as we WILL release it within a week of the
		party!

		---------------------------------------------------------------

Demo - The maximum size of the complete, unarchived, executable demo
and ALL accompanying files must be less than 4096 kb. This
		includes MIDI patches, etc.

		- Any video Mode allowed from VGA to SVGA, up to a maximum of
640x480x256. But ANY SVGA demo MUST have VESA video bios
support! (Plus any other particular video card support is
		optional)

		- The maximum running length of the demo is 20 minutes.

		- No pure animations or animations with players.

		- The demo must not save anything to hard disk; assume 0 bytes
		free.

		- Only 1 entry per group is allowed.

		- The demo must run without user interaction after any required
setup information is acquired from the user. If you do have a
Crystal Dreams 2-type interface after the demo is complete, it
is suggested that you include a commandline parameter to bypass
it. (This is to make it just that bit easier on the
		organisers)

		---------------------------------------------------------------

4kb Intro - The maximum size of the intro is *exactly* 4096 bytes.

		- The intro cannot contain any sound or bitmapped graphics of
any description. If any textures are needed they must be
		generated at run-time or initialisation.

		- The maximum running length, including any initialisation
(i.e. from the time we hit Enter from DOS till the time the DOS
prompt comes up) is 5 minutes.

		- Any video Mode allowed from VGA to SVGA, up to a maximum of
640x480x256. But ANY SVGA demo MUST have VESA video bios
support! (Plus any other particular video card support is
		optional)

		- The intro must not save anything to hard disk; assume 0 bytes
		free.

		- The intro must run without user interaction and must leave
the system in a stable state, in text mode, when finished.
No scummy savings of a few bytes by not quitting back to dos or
		setting text mode, etc.

		- The intro cannot give away any clues as to the identity of
		the author.

		- Code it in a high-level language if you dare =)

		---------------------------------------------------------------

Music - The song must be played on the compo machine using the 1Mb
Gravis Ultrasound Max on a player of the author's choice.
Which means the maximum size of all the samples is 1024kb!

		- No MIDI songs please.

		- At most 32 channels can be used.

		- There is a 20 minute limit on song length but if you're even
thinking about going anywhere near that limit it had better be
		DAMN good :)

		- Only 1 entry per musician is allowed.

		- While the song is played (and until voting is over) only the
following information will be shown: number of channels used,
module format, size of song in bytes and name of song (read
		below for restriction on this).

		- The name of the song MUST not give away any hints of the
		composer(s), that means no "Progression 3" "I Love 303's"
thankyouverymuch :). If the organisers decide that the name
does not follow this, then it will be given a number and that
is all people will have to remember it by when voting! So it is
in your best interest to have an appropriate name! :)

		---------------------------------------------------------------

16Kb Music (Thanks to Black Friday for this idea)

		- All the rules for the normal music compo apply but the
maximum size of the song is 16kb.

		- Multiple entries per musician ARE allowed.

		---------------------------------------------------------------

Graphics - The picture must have a resolution not larger than 640x480
and can have a maximum of 256 onscreen colours.

		- Full screen pictures only please.

		- The picture must be totally hand-drawn on computer, no
		raytracing, scanning, copying, etc.

		- The artist must provide the judges with at least three
examples of the picture in various stages of development,
together with a version of the final picture which is not
signed and does not give away the identity of the artist. This
version will be the one shown at the party. The signed version
is the one that will be distributed.

		- All pictures must be supplied as IFF/LBM format files. (Only
to stop us flipping through 10 different picture viewers)

		---------------------------------------------------------------

ANSI (Thanks to Maeve Wolf for these)

		- Both 80x25 and 80x50 modes are allowed.

		- No screen length limit - but in moderation, of course.
We stop viewing at 300 lines... And that's being generous. =)

		- ABSOLUTELY *NO* use of Gif2Ansi is allowed!!!! Ack..wash my
		mouth out with soap..

		- If the ansi is a .BIN (wide scrolling ansi), we will also
view it in VGA mode..so be warned.

		- No coloured ascii's please. =)

		- No logo collections or one screen logos...only pictures or
		pictures+logo.

		- If using Icemode Extended Colours, warn us in advance for
		viewing.

		- The artist must provide the judges with at least three
examples of the picture in various stages of development,
together with a version of the final picture which is not
signed and does not give away the identity of the artist.
This version will be the one shown at the party. The signed
version is the one that will be distributed.

		- All pictures must be supplied as ANS or BIN format files.

		---------------------------------------------------------------

How does the All judging will be done at the party and whilst remote entries
voting work? may gain any placing, prizes will only awarded to those present
		at the party site.

A person will be given a maximum of one prize per entry no
matter what the actual placing's are. (That's for those compos
that allow multiple entries - Demo and Music compos are max
		1 entry per person)

Any prizes not awarded due to the prior rule will be given to
		the next best entry.

You cannot enter something in more than one compo, that means
for example that any picture or music used in a demo cannot be
entered in the gfx/music compo as well.

Voting will be done by those present at the party place and
will be by a preferential voting system.

Voters will rank all the entries for a competition in the order
they think is best, and points will be allocated accordingly.

However, voters can also leave out entries altogether, and
zero points will be awarded - so placing an entry last is
		still significant.

There will ALSO be judges, who's job will be to check that all
rules are followed, and that no cheating occurs. Judges will
also vote, and their vote will have double the value of
everyone else's! The judges will be announced at the party.

The organisers reserve the right to whatever they bloody well
want to with regards to the competition. :)
This includes final interpretation of the rules, so if you
have any queries, contact us beforehand.

		---------------------------------------------------------------

What stuff is The prizes are not yet confirmed. But rest assured we will have
up for grabs? great prizes for all competitions, most likely including some
GUS Plug 'n Play's , and some other cool stuff.

the ground this time! Jud may be substituted for Qld guys. ;)

Squirt are insane enough to provide theirs :). Stuff will be
shown on the projector with Dolby [)(] eLeeTo surround. Bring
your own VCR's for VHS stuff if you like, projector use is
		free.

trouble, in that case we will throw you outside until you
		sober off!

		- If you puke, the organisers won't clean it up, and somebody
		will :).

		- The organisers take no responsibility for illegal activities
at the party place. Not that you guys would DO anything like
		that anyway, of course.

		- Anybody caught stealing or intentionally causing damage to
equipment and/or the venue and/or any persons will be taken to
the police! We will not put up with any crap like that!

		       bring some in, GREAT! :)
		     - Someone who would like to take lots of photos of the
party and then scan them, then we can make a full party
		       report from them!
                     - Also someone who would like to be a 'roving' reporter,
taking interviews and whatever! :) (very respected job!)
		     - Trustworthy people to help collect money at the door.
		     - People to help setup and packup everything.
		     - People with electrical training, or computer repairing
experience, who can help *when* things go wrong. :)
		     - Large built people to act as military strong men. =)

Helpers will not go unrewarded! :)

And helpers don't have to worry about missing any of the fun,
as you will not miss a thing! All jobs are voluntary of course
and anyway, you will probably get to wear a special 'Helper'
Badge which will confirm your eleetness! =)
